Don’t Starve Together [DST] – FAQ

Last Updated November 3, 2025 By Johnny Salib / FlamingGaymer 11 Comments

Note: Watch me play Don’t Starve Together with my community and similar games on Twitch! Always happy to answer questions there!

WHAT IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

Don’t Starve Together is a multiplayer open-world survival craft game that allows players to explore a map, craft resources/structures and destroy multiple bosses including large mobs like the Deerclops, Bearger and Crab King as well as mini-bosses like the Bee Queen and Spider Queen.

Players will have to face many challenges along the way such as surviving seasons like Winter, Spring, Summer and Autumn.

Though Don’t Starve Together has a strong focus on exploration and combat, creative players will be happy to know that there is a great deal of opportunity when base building. Base customization often relies on skins which can be farmed or purchased from the in-game shop; however, players can also download mods that open up worlds of possibilities.

Don’t Starve Together allows players to either host servers from their computers, join public servers from other’s computers and players also have the option of joining dedicated public servers (paid for) that are hosted by various companies.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER FREE?

No, at this time Don’t Starve Together is not a free game and will require players to purchase the game through Steam or console specific stores.

Though Don’t Starve Together is not free, players should note that Klei often has sales that will allow players to either buy the game for 50% or less and has also been known to throw buy 1 get 1 free sales in hopes of having friends join each other in The Constant.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER MULTIPLAYER?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is meant to be played as a multiplayer game.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER LOCAL CO OP?

Yes and No.

Don’t Starve Together can be played as a local co-op game; however, players can host their worlds online as well. While players can pay for a dedicated server using a third party supplier, the game can be hosted from your computer; allowing friends to play globally.

Players can change these settings during world generation, however, they will not be able to change them once a world is launched. While this is true, players will be able to manually duplicate files in order to change these settings.

CAN YOU PLAY DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ALONE?

Yes, you can play Don’t Starve Together alone.

There are technically a few ways of playing Don’t Starve Together alone. Players can either set their game mode to “Alone” by reducing the amount of players to 1 when in their world set up or they can simply have an world that is set to have multiple players that is either locked to their Local Area Network (LAN) or is password protected in case they want to invite friends to play with them on a later date.

While choosing the way a player sets up their server will be based on their personal preference, I would recommend having a public world that is password protected simply because of the versatility of allowing friends to join later if you so desire, however, if you know from the get go that you are not going to want friends to join or if you want to play Don’t Starve Together offline, using a LAN server or an offline server tends to be more desirable.

HOW MANY PLAYERS IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

If players are running a server on their computer they can invite a maximum of 6 players to their server, though players can have a maximum of 64 players on a dedicated server on average.

Players can use a mod to increase the amount of players allowed on their server and similarly depending on their host may be able to host more than 64 players on their dedicated server.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER SPLIT SCREEN ON PS4?

Yes, players can play Split Screen on PS4 though players will need to be signed into multiple PSN accounts at the same time in order to do so.

Players must then click the options button when in the main menu on the second DualShock 4 controller in order to enable the second player’s remove to split-screen.

If players attempt to use a Guest PSN account the PS4 will limit the game to being played offline.

HOW DO YOU BEAT DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

There is no real storyline to Don’t Starve Together, which can come as a bit of a shock for players who played the original single-player Don’t Starve.

Don’t Starve Together does not have an Adventure Mode though there have been events like The Forge and The Gorge which have had ways of “beating them.”

Players will have to create their own tasks to complete and will have to decide what they want to do in order to “advance” in the game, though similar to a game like Minecraft, the possibilities and resources are fairly endless.

DOES DON’T STARVE TOGETHER STILL GET UPDATED?

Absolutely! Don’t Starve Together gets major updates year. Though many of the updates include character re-balancing, there is at least one major update that takes place each year that adds a new zone, new mobs or new mechanics to the game.

Updates take place every few months, meaning that players will always have something new to explore. Updates will not require players to restart their worlds, though sometimes it is advised to begin a new world if the update contains massive changes to land masses and implements new zones. Even in these cases, the game has built-in coding that will allow players to experience these changes with ease.

This means that Don’t Starve Together is still a viable game to buy in 2025!

HOW MANY CHARACTERS ARE IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

There are currently 18 playable characters in Don’t Starve Together. While 14 of these characters can be played immediately upon purchasing the game, 4 characters must either be bought using real-life currency or purchased using Spools (an in-game currency that can be farmed passively over time).

Characters include:

Wilson

Wormwood [DLC]

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ON PC?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is available on a PC.

Although DST is available on a PC, I would advise against playing it on a laptop as unless the laptop has good specs and is meant for gaming, the game tends to lag and will potentially overheat the laptop or crash the game.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ON MAC?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is available on a Mac.

Although DST is available on Mac, I would advise against playing it on a MacBook as unless the MacBook has great specs it will overheat the MacBook and will experience more lag than a regular Windows Laptop.

Unfortunately, in my experience, my MacBook Pro, which is relatively new, was unable to tolerably play Don’t Starve Together.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ON XBOX ?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is available on Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ON THE PLAYSTATION?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is available on PlayStation 4 and 5.

IS DON’T STARVE TOGETHER ON SWITCH?

Yes, Don’t Starve Together is available on the Nintendo Switch and Nintendo Switch 2.

CAN YOU CROSSPLAY ON DON’T STARVE TOGETHER? CAN YOU PLAY DON’T STARVE TOGETHER CROSS PLATFORM?

Unfortunately crossplay is not fully available for Don’t Starve Together. This means that console players, such as Xbox, Nintendo Switch and PlayStation will not be able to play with PC or Mac players.

Crossplay is only available in same ecosystem, meaning that Playstation 4 users can play with PS 5 players; Nintendo Switch users can play with Switch 2 players, Xbox One users can play with Xbox Series X/S players and PC, Mac and Linxus users can freely play together.

There are also self-hosted multiplayer versions of Don’t Starve Together on console editions, allowing users to play in a split-screen setting.

The only console that breaks this rule is the Steam Deck.

CAN YOU USE MODS ON CONSOLE?

Unfortunately console players do not have access to mods as the only implementation of mods is using the Steam Workshop.

WHAT IS THE GIFT IN THE TOP LEFT OF MY SCREEN?

Players in Don’t Starve Together may notice a gift at the top left of their screen every so often which symbolizes that the players has access to a free new skin.

Players will receive a new skin every hour of gameplay up to a maximum of 8 skins a week for playing a total of 8 hours.

Players will not need to play consecutively, though players should note that the week resets on Thursday at 9:40 PM (GMT), so you may want to get all of your playing done on weekends or early in the week so you don’t miss out on those goodies.

A bit of a spoiler, during Winter’s Feast players will receive loot boxes that have the chance of dropping 4 items instead of a single item. Players will want to collect as many of these as they can as this will yield the highest amount of Spools.

In order to collect a skin players must stand next to a Science Machine or Alchemy Engine in order to make the gift glow. Players can then click on the gift unlocking the skin.

WHAT ARE SPOOLS IN DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

Spools are a resource in Don’t Starve Together that can be used to weave cosmetic items.

Players have the option of unweaving skins into Spools or trading them in the Trade Inn for alternate skins.

If players wish to use Spools they must toggle the “Wearable” category in their curio cabinet and trade in the amount of Spools required for the Skins they want.

WILL DON’T STARVE TOGETHER GET SHIPWRECKED?

No, at this time there are no hopes for Don’t Starve Together to get the Shipwrecked expansion.

Unfortunately at this time there aren’t any SW mods players can use that are worth trying as many of them are broken.

WILL DON’T STARVE TOGETHER GET HAMLET?

No, at this time there are no hopes for Don’t Starve Together to get the Hamlet expansion. Though, players will be able to get HAM objects by using mods.

WHAT IS THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN DON’T STARVE AND DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

The biggest difference between Don’t Starve and Don’t Starve Together is the fact that Don’t Starve is a single-player game that also contains a story/adventure mode.

While both are survival craft games at heart; Don’t Starve Together tends to be more open world and is the only version of Don’t Starve that continues to get updated.

WILL DON’T STARVE TOGETHER COME ON MOBILE?

At this time there are no hopes for Don’t Starve Together to be brought to mobile.

The assumption is due to the lower capabilities of mobile devices, especially with internet connection and uptime, that this will never be a possibility.

However, the single player version of Don’t Starve is available on mobile devices.

HOW TO PAUSE DON’T STARVE TOGETHER?

Yes! As of 2021, players will be able to pause their DST game, even if there are players in the world!

When players are solo, they will be able to hit ESC to pause immediately,

Players can change the Pause trigger by going into their menu, going into Controls and changing their Pause prompt.

Players will also be able to pause the Don’t Starve Together world by shutting down the server or hitting pause on their Dedicated Server. It should be noted that this will kick out all players from the server for the time being.

Question. I’m aware it says console players cannot play with pc players, but can Playstation players play with Xbox players? Asking because a friend and I have been wanting to play for a while.

Unfortunately the answer is no. Console players will have to play the game on the same physical console to play together. 🙁

Pausing was recently added as something the host of a server can do without kicking other players!

Unfortunately, I don’t think so. I’m pretty sure it’s only split screen on the same console unless they’ve changed things up since.

I purchased new character. However only one console is unlock the other console still showing the character I just purchased is locked. Does that mean I need to purchase twice to play new characters?
