Crab King | Don’t Starve Together Guide

Last Updated January 4, 2021 By Johnny Salib / FlamingGaymer Leave a Comment

It’s awesome to see the Don’t Starve Together world has been introducing some pretty cool new bosses that are unique to the multiplayer world, including the Crab King who was released during the Return of Them update.

The Crab King comes in fairly hot, having between 20,000 to 95,000 HP depending on how many Gems and the type of Gems that are socketed in the Crab King.

Similarly, the Crab King will gain certain attack attributes depending on what Gems and how many are socketed in him, though his special abilities always include freezing the player, damaging the player’s boat, summoning Imposing Claws and being able to heal himself.

WHERE IS THE CRAB KING?

The Crab King can be found in the middle of the Swell Ocean surrounded by circle of Sea Stacks.

Players may want to destroy some of the Sea Stacks to clear the area around the Crab King in hopes of having more room to battle him and place boats.

BREAKDOWN OF HOW THE CRAB KING’S STATS & ATTACKS WORK

As mentioned, players can essentially customize their battle with the Crab King by socketing different colours of Gems and different amounts of said Gems.

While going over this list it’s important to note that 1 Iridescent Gem counts as 1 of each colour Gem and Pearl’s Pearl counts as 3 of each colour Gem.

RED GEMS

Red Gems will affect the amount of Health the Crab King has.

Players will be able to tell how much health the Crab King has lost as every 10% of its Health players take will cause a piece of rock to fall from his crown.

PURPLE GEMS

Purple Gems affect the number of Geysers that appear around the Crab King.

Without upgrades, Geysers will appear every 8 seconds, appearing under all boats in a 25 Pitchfork radius, dealing 10 damage and causing the boat to leak, taking 0.5 damage per second.

BLUE GEMS

When the Crab King is below 85% maximum Health he will cast a freezing spell that will lower the temperature of players around him, essentially freezing a player for 10 seconds.

Blue Gems will affect three stats, including the temperature players will drop to, the range in which the freezing attack will take place and the amount of resistance the Crab King will have against freezing items, such as the Ice Staff.

It should be noted that players may decrease in temperature up to 3 times the stated amounts if they are Wet.

Players can easily avoid the freezing attack as the Crab King will give a warning by raising its claws as they glow red. Back away to a boat that’s far away during this time.

ORANGE GEMS

When the Crab King’s health drops below 85% he will begin trying to heal himself every 40 seconds.

It takes 10 seconds for the Crab King to heal.

If players want to stop the Crab King from healing they must destroy the piece of rock he is trying to consume.

Orange Gems will affect the amount of healing the Crab King receives per rocks as well as the amount of hits it takes to cancel the healing action.

GREEN GEMS

When the Crab King’s health drops below 90% he will begin summoning Imposing Claws which move around the water slowly, looking for boats to clamp on to.

If Imposing Claws clamp onto a boat, they will remain attached, forcing the boat to be unable to move properly.

Upon initially clamping, an Imposing Claw will deal 35 damage to the boat and will deal 17.5 extra damage every 3-4 seconds.

Players can attack Imposing Claws in order to release the boat, though it should be noted that Imposing Claws respawn every 30 seconds after they are destroyed.

Killing an Imposing Claw will provide the player with 1 Meat.

Green Gems will affect the number of Imposing Claws that spawn as well as the Health the Imposing Claw has.

REWARDS TO KILLING THE CRAB KING

Upon securing the takedown of the Crab King players will receive a variety of items, including:

🦀 7 Meat

🦀 4 Soprano Shells Bells (50% chance to get 1 additional Soprano Shell Bells and 25% chance to receive 2 additional Soprano Shell Bells)

🦀 3 Alto Shell Bells (50% chance to get 1 additional Alto Shell Bells and 25% chance to receive 2 additional Alto Shell Bells)

🦀 2 Baritone Shell Bells (50% chance to get 1 additional Baritone Shell Bell)

🦀 3 Barnacles (25% chance to receive up to 4 additional Barnacles, each having a 25% chance)

🦀 Strident Trident Blueprint

🦀 1 Inactive Celestial Tribute which will appear as an Underwater Salvageable

Players will also receive all the Gems that they socket into the Crab King, making it very worth destroying and ensuring that players are not “wasting” the valuable resource as Gems can be used for a variety of magic items.

If players have socketed Pearl’s Pearl, they will receive a Cracked Pearl instead.

WHAT HAPPENS IF I RUN AWAY FROM THE CRAB KING BEFORE KILLING HIM?

As wasting resources is a huge concern for players, players may be discouraged to walk away from this boss battle or worse, die during it.

Players can rest easy knowing that if they leave combat the Crab King will return to his inert state, essentially dropping all socketed Gems and of course Pearl’s Pearl if it is also socketed.

Exiting the boss battle with the Crab King will also cause new Sea Stacks to appear around him.

HOW OFTEN CAN I BATTLE THE CRAB KING?

If players kill the Crab King they can battle him again in 20 days.

Alternatively, if players run away from the boss battle with the Crab King, they will be able to re-socket Gems immediately.

Players may want to run away from the Crab King if they have mistakenly socketed the wrong Gems or have forgotten to place Pearl’s Pearl.
