Raise your hand if you started tanking simply because you knew that there were Mounts attached to the Role. I’m certain there are plenty of players who have no actual interest in Tanking, but complete duties as Tanks simply because of the achievements associated with them.
Now, I certainly can’t judge you if you’re someone who is only tanking content to get Mounts, especially because it’s clear the developers wanted to find ways to encourage players to tank as it is typically always a Role in need… and once upon a time ago, I was you.
When I first started playing FFXIV my husband was our group’s Tank. We always had a party of at least four people so the need to branch out and try different Roles wasn’t necessary. My brother-in-law was and always is our main healer and it wasn’t until my siblings took their first break from the game that I tried anything other than a DPS job.
While at first, I switched to playing Healer, I’m almost positive I did this only because the White Mage has its own Mount; I quickly began playing Tank for every Roulette not just because of the extremely fast solo queues, but because I ended up genuinely enjoying the Role. Although I play all of the Jobs at this point, I definitely play Tank the most frequently.
In recent years I took some time off of FFXIV. My initial break started at the beginning of COVID when I was let go and the second time was when I began focussing on other games on the blog and my Twitch Stream. I kid you not, the first thing I checked when logging on was how far I was in the Tank Achievements since I was planning on returning to tanking as soon as I got comfortable with the game again. The shocking thing was, I was nowhere near some and very close to others,
I’m sure you’ve noticed that all 4 Tanks have two sets of achievements, each giving a different Mount. While both sets can be farmed generally passively, one is a bit harder to farm since you’ll have to be selective of the content you do.
As an example, while my Paladin had 97 points in one achievement, the other was only at 15. At first, I told myself “Well, that’s fine ’cause I can just do level 90 Dungeons with it” but unfortunately I was wrong.
By far, the older Tanks have a harder time farming their achievements since there is an actual split between what content is needed to complete them. The Gunbreaker is the only tank that has two straightforward achievements. While I’m sure that there was a good reason for the achievements to have been segregated in the past, it’s a terrible nuisance these days.
I can’t lie, I ended up farming a good portion of the achievements in unsynced Duties even though I Tank at least 3-4 Roulettes a day. I was only able to complete my Warrior’s achievements this way and I’ll explain why shortly. It’s somewhat sad to think that someone who plays the game as much as I do and who would willingly Tank most content, achievement or not, had to “cheat” to get the Mounts. I am very hopeful that all new Tanks will follow the Gunbreaker’s method of achievements rather than the “original tanks.”
So let’s get to chatting about how to get these achievements quickly so you can get them done. I’ll cover ways to naturally get these achievements as well as the best duties to complete unsynced if you want to farm them by yourself or with a party.
Note: If you have any questions about FFXIV that you want me to cover feel free to leave them in a comment below, you can also ask me while I am streaming on Twitch, YouTube or in our community discord.
WHAT ARE THE TANK ACHIEVEMENTS THAT GIVE MOUNTS AND WHERE DO YOU FIND THEM?
As mentioned there are two types of Tank Achievements. The “original” tanks (Paladin, Warrior and Dark Knight) have a set of “But Somebody’s Gotta Do It” achievements and all tanks have the “Tank You…” achievements.
There is only one tier of achievements for “But Somebody’s Gotta Do It” achievements, however, if players are trying to farm for Mounts they will need to reach the third tier of the “Tank You” achievements, with the Gunbreaker also getting a Mount for their second tier.
BUT SOMEBODY’S GOTTA DO IT (PALADIN, DARK KNIGHT & WARRIOR)
To acquire the “But Somebody’s Gotta Do It” achievements players must participate in 200 High-Level Duties.
I can’t lie it was the wording of “High-Level Duties” that initially confused me as to why I wasn’t getting any points towards the achievement. I even asked my husband if he felt it was clear what Duties were included in this and he swiftly said “no, it’s such poor wording.”
High-level duties have nothing to do with the level of content but have to do with the type of content you are completing. Eligible content includes Normal Raids, Savage Raids, Extreme Trials and Unreal Trials, otherwise, you’re just out of luck. To me, this is the achievement I think sucks the worst. While I don’t mind Tanking for content like this, typically a player will only complete a single Raid per day and the other content is not in any Roulettes.
While yes, you are bound to get the achievement sooner or later since Raids are quite essential to upgrading Gear, levelling your Jobs quickly or even for farming those juicy Tomestones of Poetics, the fact that if you were to do it passively it would take 200 days feels somewhat ridiculous.
I understand that achievements are meant to take time and reward players for their standout efforts, but even adding one of the other Roulletes into the mix would make this achievement feel much more accessible.
My confusion came from thinking that “high-level duties” included content above level 61 or at least covered level 90 content since to me that seems more in line with the wording “high-level” especially since it is incongruent with the already labelled “high-end” duties. It might just be me, but I somewhat wish the achievements were labelled as “200 high-end duties and previous high-end duties” since it would probably make more sense to players.
TANK YOU, (PALADIN, DARK KNIGHT, WARRIOR & GUNBREAKER)
The Tank You achievements are much easier to obtain than the Somebody’s Gotta Do It variants. To qualify players must complete 300 forms of content that are above level 61. This includes Dungeons, Extreme Trials and Unreal Trials. Players can get a point in each if they are completing the 50/60/70/80 or Leveling Roulette, but only if they have the daily reward bonus up. So, you can’t spam these Roulettes and would be better off spamming the same Dungeon Trial at that point.
Honestly, it seems like any content over level 61 advances these achievements and even though Trials and Raids are not included on the list, the number goes up each time. I’ve even seen
There are two tiers of this achievement players need to be aware of. While the 3 “original Tanks” get their Mounts at tier III, which requires 300 duties to be completed, the Gunbreaker will also get one at tier II when a player completes 200. This is to balance the fact that all the other tanks get a Mount for completing 200 High-Level duties, though it is realistically muuuuuuuch easier.
SO HOW DO YOU FARM THE TANK ACHIEVEMENTS QUICKLY?
The quickest answer is “unsynced” but it’s extremely boring to repeat content over and over again just for an achievement… I say as I’m fishing in the Diadem.
The following is my breakdown of the best way to optimize for each of the tanks:
LEVELLING ROULETTE
I must admit, I’ve let myself go when it comes to Levelling Roulettes. I only really do them these days when a member of my community asks me to Tank for them.
If you’re trying to maximize your efforts and aren’t a huge fan of Levelling Roulettes, then I strongly advise you only complete them on Gunbreaker. As you can get both of your achievements done this way it’s honestly the only Tank worth doing it on. Otherwise, you’re just going to have a drastic uneven balance between your achievements.
50/60/70/80 ROULETTE
Similarly, I only recommend players complete the 50/60/70/80 Roulette on the Gunbreaker. Quite frankly, I discourage players who are trying to maximize their efforts from even running it, but that’s mostly because it gives horrible EXP and has the chance to give you a dungeon with no loot.
In reality, it does give a decent amount of Tomestones, especially if you are already at the maximum level, but in comparison to the other Roulettes, the rewards are not optimal simply due to the amount of time it takes.
RAID ROULETTE
Every day do your Raid Roulette. They’re quick and painless and it’s going to be the fastest way to chip at all of your achievements. I would strongly recommend you complete these on the Paladin, Dark Knight or Warrior, however, any Tank will do.
This is the only Roulette you can guarantee for all of your Tanks, which is why I generally don’t do it on the Gunbreaker. Since the other Roulletes cover both of its achievements, I’d rather complete this on the Tanks that take longer to farm.
Now, the only issue with the Raid Roulette is that you will need to do a level 70+ Raid, so it won’t be guaranteed that you get points towards your achievement that day. While this is true, this is true for all of the Tanks and with the “original Tanks” you are at least guaranteed points toward the “Somebody’s Got to Do It” achievements.
COMPLETE WONDROUS TAILS ON YOUR TANK
Wondrous Tails is a portion of the game I recommend players do every week even when they have levelled up all of their jobs. Each week I can almost always guarantee myself a single line which gets me at least 30,000 MGP and is one of the best ways to quickly farm the currency.
As there are several great goodies from Wondrous Tails it tends to be very worth it to save your Second Chance points for Shuffles rather than Retries. I personally do every single Extreme Trial on the list with my Warrior, Paladin or Dark Knight. It’s somewhat slow, but it’s a really good way to get your “Someone’s Gotta Do It” achievements completed, especially because you’re already going to complete the Extremes for the Wondrous Tails.
Of course, Tanks deal less damage than a DPS job, so these Unsynced Extreme Trials will take a tiny bit longer, but since you’re going to be over levelled you can often come up with a rotation that bursts damage at certain points of the fight to force the boss to skip mechanics.
I tend to do the better half of Extreme Trials in about 14 seconds because I’ve found rotations that don’t deal just enough damage to force mechanic skips as sometimes dealing too much or too little damage will allow a mechanic to take place.
At most an unsynced Extreme Trial will take me about 2 minutes and 30 seconds and these tend to be the ones with unskippable mechanics or the higher level ones. Still, 2-3 minutes for a free Seal is good in my books. Hell, I’ve even run Dungeons unsynced when I haven’t wanted to play with others. Though I don’t recommend it, it is possible and can be worth doing if you’re one Seal away from completing your Wondrous Tails and have no Retries left.
FASTEST CONTENT TO SPAM FOR ALL ACHIEVEMENTS
When it comes to farming content unsynced the best choice is the Omega Raids. Players can farm both achievements for all their Tanks in this tier and they will only need to complete the Normal version of these raids.
It is recommended that players farm Deltascape V3.0 unsynced as it takes the shortest amount of time to complete and can be done in a matter of seconds when in a group. Players do not need a full party to complete this unsynced and it is extremely common to see party finders open throughout the day this in particular.
My husband has even farmed this for a few hours for the Tanks he doesn’t have the achievements on and trust me, he’s not typically interested in repetitive content, especially when it’s not challenging by any means.
I haven’t gone this route because I simply would find it too boring, but if members of my community asked me to do it, I would. I’m not opposed to repetitive or grindy content, but I need to do it with others to enjoy it or else I’d rather just do other forms of grindy content that I feel benefits me more.
When my husband did runs of O3N in Party Finder he said they took about 3 minutes in a group of all tanks. While this might seem like a long time, due to the amount of damage loss you have simply for running as a group of Tanks it’s not that bad.
It would be a lot faster if you had even one DPS on your team, but I can’t see why a player would join in on a farm party that doesn’t give good rewards.
Even I, who is pretty good at giving up time to help other players cannot imagine playing as a DPS to farm O3N to speed up the process, especially since you need 300 runs for each Tank. Oof.
CONCLUSION
While O3N or Deltascape V3.0 is the most efficient way to farm all of your Tanking Achievements, I would strongly recommend that players try to attack the achievements in a variety of ways.
I strongly recommend that you always do Levelling Roulettes, Trial Roulettes and 50/60/70/80 Roullettes as a Gunbreaker if that is content you were already going to complete those Roulettes and save your Raid Roulettes for your other Tanks.
Though the Raid Roulettes are not a guarantee to get any points towards your achievements, they are generally fast and the High-Level Duty achievements tend to take longer to farm than the other one.
If you’re already in the habit of completing Wondrous Tails, make sure you always do the Extreme Trials on one of the original Tanks. While yes this is only 2-5 points per week, it helps chip away at your achievements and in the long run can make it so you can simply focus on running the regular Roulettes when you’ve got that done.
I personally started the achievements with the Warrior because it was the Tank I felt the safest with while running content, if you don’t care what tank you play, I would strongly recommend starting with the Gunbreaker. That way once you have it aside you can essentially just choose what tank you want to work on next.
But I’m curious, do you have any other ways you recommend farming the Tanking achievements? Have you farmed O3N and how long did it take you? Let me know in the comments below!
