I tend to get overwhelmed when there are too many resources in a video game and if I can’t figure out what a resource is for fast enough I begin feeling like it is entirely useless or cannot be used until much later in the game. Now, in the case of Ancient Obolus, I didn’t even realize that this resource existed at first as I did my best to refrain from exploring too much on my own since I was ensuring that I did my first playthrough on Twitch but my community quickly pointed me in the right direction for this resource and there has been no looking back.
Ancient Obolus are extremely straightforward to obtain, however, they will require the player to search the world a bit in order to locate how to obtain them. The thing is, players will want to obtain these relatively early as they can really set a player forward, especially in the early game.
I’m sure that if you’re looking up this article you’re already well aware that Ancient Obolus are important for your journey in Conan Exiles, but I will take you through everything you need to know about this currency including the best ways to get it and every way you can use the currency with some tips on when to use them on what. So let’s get cracking!
HOW DO YOU GET ANCIENT OBOLUS?
Ancient Obolus are obtainable in one way, by providing a Khitan Task Master with an item to do with a Sorcerer.
There are three different resources players can provide the Khitan Taskmaster being:
A Sorcerer’s Skull, which will provide 3-5 Ancient Obloli when placed in the Cauldron/Round Pedestal.
Players will also get the following items for turning in a Sorcerer’s Skull:
8-16 Alchemical Base
1-2 Demon Blood
3-7 Gold Coins
6-10 Silver Coins
5-10 Steelfire
A Sorcerer Thrall, which will provide 8-12 Ancient Oboli when brought to the cages after using a Truncheon and Bindings.
Players will also get the following items for turning in a Sorcerer Thrall:
22-32 Alchemical Base
3-6 Goldstone
6-8 Silverstone
31-42 Steelfire
1 Exquisite Stew, Lasting Feast or Spiced Exquisite Meat
A Magi Skull, which can be obtained from the Witch Hunt encounter will provide 15-22 Ancient Oboli when placed in the Cauldron/Round Pedestal.
Players will also get the following items for turning in a Magi Skull:
33-44 Alchemical Base
4-8 Demon Blood
6-9 Goldstone
7-12 Silverstone
45-60 Steelfire
I personally turn in predominantly Sorcerer Skulls, though if I am very close to a Khitan Trader and I see a Sorcerer I will drag them to the cages, otherwise I’m a bit too lazy to lead them far distances.
You would think that Magi Skulls are useful for other things than giving to the Khitan Trader, though this is not true, the same goes for Sorcerer Skulls, though you can deconstruct these for Bones… which you should already have plenty of, not going to lie.
WHAT CAN YOU PURCHASE WHEN USING ANCIENT OBOLUS AND IS IT WORTH IT?
Honestly, there are really great purchases you can make when using an Ancient Obolus, but they are quite costly. Depending on where you are in the game you’re going to want a different yield and the same can be said whether or not you are playing single-player or are on a multiplayer server.
The following section will provide you with all the information as to what you can purchase as well as what I think is worth it and when you would do it:
THRALLS
I would begin your Ancient Obolus journey by buying yourself a few different Thralls, specifically the Combat Thralls. In my opinion the Workers aren’t as necessary as there are much better Thralls out in the wild that you can catch and realistically they’re just going to depend on what recipes you want access to. Here’s all the information you need about all of the Thralls and what they do:
ACASTEL NINEFINGERS (CARPENTER)
Acastel can be used at any Artisan Table or Carpenter’s bench and is best used for crafting Wood and Branches.
Essentially, this is the only recipe players can gain access to when using even a T4 Carpenter, to be specific you can convert 1 Wood into 1 Branch or several Branches into 1 Wood.
Realistically, while having Acastel is nice for the speed he provides, he doesn’t provide much for 50 Ancient Oboli
DARMOK THE EXPERIMENTER (ALCHEMIST)
Potentially Darmok is an interesting Thrall to have, though I admittedly got myself a T4 Alchemist pretty easily by running around the world without the need to purchase him.
Darmok can be placed at any Alchemist Bench, any Cauldron, the Dryer’s Bench or the Fermentation Barrel.
Resources that unlock when Darmok is placed at the tables include Oil, Spice and Tar at Alchemical Benches and Bitter Tea, Frenzywine, Honey Whisky, Pirate Rotgut and Stygian Liquor at the Fermentation Barrel.
Of course just like every other Alchemist players will also gain Demon-Fire Orbs, Gaseous Orbs, Grease Orbs and Fill.
GRATT STINKFINGER (TANNER)
Gratt is a Tanner who can be placed at any Artisan Table, Tanner or Tanner’s Table.
Quite frankly, Gratt can be pretty useful, though a lot of my feelings towards this is because I have not located a T4 Tanner anywhere else and I’m in need of one currently.
You see T4 Tanners can be useful for making 1 Silk from 2 Gossamer or 10 Fat Grubs, which I’m currently in need of a lot of. Otherwise, Tanners aren’t really useful for much.
JON THE TINKERER (SMELTER)
I was actually surprised to know that Jon the Tinkerer was a Smelter and I was ready to place him at a Tinkerer’s Table before I found out he was only placable at the Artisan Table and the Furnace.
Admittedly, as useful as having a Smelter is, this doesn’t unlock any other recipes and only makes Smelting faster. I will admit, that is pretty useful when you’re really in need of getting a resource, but I personally have 3 Furnaces going at the same time and don’t run into many issues without a Smelter. Now, if you’re on a big server, I can see why it would be extremely necessary to have a T4 Thrall on your Furnace, but if not… well, you just paid a lot for nothing!
NJOROR BATTLEBORN (ARMORER)
Armorers are probably the actual best Thralls to have in the game and admittedly I would use Oboli to get Njoror, though players may want all three types of Armorers depending on how min-max they are.
Njoror is a Scoutwright so he will be able to reduce the weight of any of the Armour that he provides players with specifically providing players with the following:
2% bonus damage
+2 Stamina
+8 Health
+12.5% Durability
-19% Weight
100% Armour Bonus on Light Armour
31% Armour Bonus on Medium Armour
20% Armour Bonus on Heavy Armour
Quite frankly, Scoutwrights aren’t the best in my opinion, but they can be useful to start off with when you don’t have a Shieldwright which tend to be the best Armourers, especially for your Thrall’s Armour.
Armourers are actually pretty versatile as they can also be placed in Artisan Tables, Casting Tables, Tanner’s Tables, Saddler’s Worktables, Tanner’s Tables and Tinker’s Benches.
In a Tanner’s Table they can turn 4 Hide and 1 Twine into 1 Thick Hide and 2 Gossamer into 1 Silk.
OYVIND TALL-TREE (ENTERTAINER)
Listen, I love my Entertainers, it’s nice to get some healing and Corruption taken off of me, but like… what a waste of Oboli. It’s ridiculously easy to find Entertainers in the wild and since they don’t actually provide you with anything special this is a waste to get. All you need is a Tier 4 Entertainer, any one, but realistically you could get away with a lower Entertainer if you’re just trying to get rid of Corruption as the other Entertainers are mostly useful when you need quick heals and you need to run back out again.
DALINSIA SNOWHUNTER (FIGHTER)
Dalinsia is by far the best Thrall to get in the game with Ancient Oboli as she is the strongest of the tier, unless you count Purge Thralls.
Dalinsia is a Fighter who can fight by your side as both ranged or melee, though she does a mean job tanking as long as she is given the proper food to survive.
On a baseline, Dalinsia has:
3106 Health
15 Strength
30 Vitality
1.117 Melee Multiplier
1.032 Ranged Multiplier
Obviously, Dalinsia will get better stats as she levels up, but even before she does she’s an absolute powerhouse that can help you wreck almost anything. I would honestly stick to having her as a melee Follower due to her Melee multiplier and hand her a better weapon and shield. This will make her fairly unstoppable and she will not need to be replaced for a very long time.
If you have two Dalinsia’s give one a Bow, but still make sure to give her a Sword and Shield as she will be able to choose what damage will do the best for the fight.
JANOS
Janos is pretty weak, to be honest, and I would simply leave him in my base just in case Dalinsia dies.
On a baseline Janos has the following stats:
2087 Health
30 Strength
10 Vitality
5 Grit
0.978 Melee Multiplier
0.903 Ranged Multiplier
MARKOS, BANE OF BEASTS (ARCHER)
Markos is slightly better than Janos but is still worse than Dalinsia. I would honestly settle for him if you don’t want to farm for Dalinsia.
His baseline stats are as follows:
2884 Health
15 Strength
30 Vitality
0.96 Melee Multiplier
0.96 Ranged Multiplier
Although he is an archer he can also be given a Sword, though I would refrain from doing so if you have Dalinsia, if you do not do what you please ss both stats are the same.
VAPNIR (ARCHER)
Vapnir what are we going to do with your Trash self? Kill you, honestly, sacrifice you, that’s about it. Vapnir is the worst Thrall to get out of all the purchasable ones and while he can still do a bit of damage, you should not be sad if he dies.
As a baseline he has the following stats:
1938 Health
30 Strength
10 Vitality
5 Grit
0.84 Melee Multiplier
0.84 Ranged Multiplier
T4 SUPPLY MATERIALS
Tier 4 Supply Materials are by far some of the best loot you can get in the early game and I strongly recommend you begin spamming these as soon as you have at least one good Combatant Thrall from the Trader.
With T4 Supply Material Crates you can get the following:
Common Highland Berry-Bush Seeds which can be used to get Highland Berries for Dried Berries, Planters, Oil or Spice.
Rare Hops Seeds which can be used to get Hop for Ale or food for Horses.
Rare Aloe Seeds which can be used to get Aloe Leaves for healing items, Juice, Tea and Food.
Very Rare Golden Lotus Seeds which can be used to get Golden Lotus Flower for Golden Lotus Potions and Golden Lotus Powder for Elixir of Enduring.
Common Iron Bars for Armour, Tools and Weapons
Common Steel Bars for Armour, Tools and Weapons
Common Tar for honestly a lot of recipes.
ARMOUR, WEAPONS AND TOOLS
The Armour, Weapons and Tools are a bit harder to track as they will require you to be at specific locations in order to get them. This section will be pretty hefty and I’ll try to be as concise as I can be so you know everything you need to know about where to get these Armour, Weapons and Tools and what they are good for.
Unfortunately, the Armour Weapons and Tools will take a lot longer to locate and actually access as each is bound to a specific trader.
