Hermit Island | Don’t Starve Together Guide

Last Updated January 4, 2021 By Johnny Salib / FlamingGaymer Leave a Comment

A great aspect to Klei and Don’t Starve Together is the fact that the dev team has always been interested in introducing a number of new interesting and innovative biomes.

One of the more recent biome additions into the Don’t Starve Together world is the Hermit Island, which was introduced during the Return of Them update.

The Hermit Island is located remotely in the Ocean and will only be accessible when players build a Boat to travel. Players will be able to  initially recognize the Hermit Island as it is covered with Moon Crater Turf as well as Shell Beach Turf.

Players will also find the Crabby Hermit, who is the first NPC in specific to DST, located beside her Hermit Home, a Bee Box and 6 Drying Racks, allowing players to begin life on the lonely island and allowing them to survive without bringing too many supplies.

While it is not necessary to visit the Hermit Island, as many of the resources can be found elsewhere, players will be happy to note that there are some indispensable resources on the island that will make their lives easier.

Not only that, but the Hermit Island has many resources that can only be located on the Lunar Islands, which can be tricky and dangerous to navigate due to the Enlightenment mechanic, which does not take effect on the Hermit Island.

VEGETATION AND RESOURCES ON THE HERMIT ISLAND

The Hermit Island has a very similar vegetation to the Lunar Island, having the following shared resources:

๐ŸŒณ Lune Trees

๐ŸŒณ Lunar Saplings

๐ŸŒณ Moon Glasses

๐ŸŒณ Driftwoods

๐ŸŒณ Blue Kelps

๐ŸŒณ Plugged Fissures

UNDERWATER SALVAGEABLES

Although not specific to the Hermit Island, players will want to become acquainted to the loot that they can collect when interacting with Underwater Salvagables.

As mentioned, players will need a Pinchin’ Winch attached to their Boat in order to obtain the loot from an Underwater Salvageable and loot will range in use.

Loot includes:

CHESS PIECES

Chess Pieces are primarily an aesthetic addition to DST and in most cases players will have to craft one using a Potter’s Wheel, though players will be able to find any of the Chess Pieces when interacting with an Underwater Salvageable including:

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Carved Hornucopia

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Bubble Pipe Carving

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Anchor Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Pawn Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Rook Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Knight Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Bishop Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Queenly Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Kingly Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Deerclops Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Bearger Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Moose/Goose Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Dragonfly Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Ancient Guardian Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Toadstool Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Bee Queen Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Klaus Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Antlion Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Ancient Fuelweaver Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Malbatross Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Crab King Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ Moon Moth Figure

โ™Ÿ๏ธ “Moon” Figure

SUSPICIOUS MARBLE

Suspicious Marbles are commonly spawned around the Don’t Starve Together world and appear to be broken Marble Statues.

There are three different types of Suspicious Marble pieces, including the Clockwork Rook nose, the Clockwork Knight head and the Clockwork Bishop head.

Suspicious Marbles can be brought back to broken statues in hopes of completing them to summon shadow variants of the Clockworks.

It is strongly recommended that if players want to transport a Suspicious Marble they use a Beefalo as doing so will make sure that the player does not have to sit through the ludicrous slow speed the Suspicious Marble inflicts.

CELESTIAL ALTAR PIECES

Acting very similar to the Celestial Orb, players now have the opportunity to build a Celestial Altar in hopes of gaining access to the Celestial Tab.

The Celestial Altar comes in three pieces, the Base, Orb (not to be confused with the Celestial Orb) and Idol and very similar to the Suspicious Marble or Chess Pieces, they will inflict players with a speed debuff when trying to transport them.

While players may find the Celestial Orb as an adequate way of accessing the Celestial Tab, players will be happy to note that they can have an unlimited amount of Celestial Altars if they find all of the pieces.

The only other way players will be able to construct a Celestial Altar is by searching the Lunar Mine Biome for Inviting Formations.

Players should note that Celestial Altars can only be placed in a Celestial Fissure.

INACTIVE CELESTIAL TRIBUTES

An Inactive Celestial Tribute is a newer addition to the game and is normally dropped when players defeat the Crab King and socket Pearl’s Pearl.

Again, similar to Chess Pieces, Suspicious Marbles and Celestial Altar Pieces, the Inactive Celestial Tribute will slow players down as players will need to march themselves over to a Celestial Fissure in order to activate them.

Similar to the Celestial Altar and Celestial Orb, players will gain access to the Celestial Tab when standing near an active Celestial Tribute.

Redundant, eh? But who can say no to having one object versus three, or relying on the RNG gods to provide you a Celestial Orb from a Moon Rock.

CAVE-IN BOULDERS

While some players may be confused how it’s possible to collect a Cave-in boulder, it makes a good amount of sense when you think of an Underwater Salvageable as a deep hole that may lead far into a cave system.

Cave-in boulders are by far one of the worst rewards players can get as all they will provide players with are Rocks upon mining with a Pickaxe.

SHELL CLUSTERS

Shell Clusters are another heavy object for players to carry, though they will provide players with a newer resource being the Shell Bell.

There are nine types of Shell Bells, being the Baritone 1, Baritone 2, Baritone 3, Alto 1, Alto 2, Alto 3, Soprano 1, Soprano 2 and Soprano 3.

Shell Bells can further be broken into Broken Shells if smashed with a hammer, though hitting a Shell Bell with a hammer will also change the pitch that it plays.

SUNKEN CHESTS

Sunken Chests are by far the most interesting aspect of Underwater Salvageables as they provide players with the most loot.

Sunken Chests need to be hammered, dropping 3 Broken Shells but also providing players with the following groups of items:

30% CHANCE TO OBTAIN THE FOLLOWING

๐ŸŽฎ 5-8 Salt Crystals

HERMIT HOME & CRABBY HERMIT

Upon visiting the Hermit Island, players will become most interested in the Crabby Hermit who, as mentioned, is one of two NPCs players will want to get acquainted with (the other being the Pig King.)

The Crabby Hermit provides players with a number of tasks, which I will outline below, that can provide players with Shell Bells, Honey, Lures, Adverts, Pearl’s Pearl and will provide players with access to a new crafting tab, the Bottle Exchange Tab.

The Crabby Hermit will only appear during the day as during night she will retreat into her Hermit Home.

If players are unable to locate her nearby her Hermit Home, they will often find her roaming around the island performing tasks such as fishing.

Unlike the Pig King, the Crabby Hermit will take a relatively active part in a player’s interactions, often commenting on the fact that they are completing tasks that are essential to accessing her trades.

CRABBY HERMIT TASKS

The Crabby Hermit has 14 tasks which players can complete in hopes of receiving goodies from her.

Completing tasks for the first time will cause the Crabby Hermit to increase in friendship level.

While players can repeat some tasks several times to obtain extra Bundles of Thanks, they will not be able to increase their friendship level with the Crabby Hermit further without completing a unique task.

Tasks consist of the following:

TASKS THAT CAN ONLY BE COMPLETED ONCE

๐ŸŽฎ Upgrading the Hermit Home, a maximum of 3 times

๐ŸŽฎ Planting 10 Flowers on the Hermit Island

๐ŸŽฎ Fertilizing 8 Berry Bushes on the Hermit Island

TASKS THAT CAN BE REPEATED INDEFINITELY

๐ŸŽฎ Drying 6 Food Items simultaneously on the Hermit Island, including Meat and Monster Meat, which can be completed indefinitely only if the Crabby Hermit eats all 6 foods off the drying racks.

๐ŸŽฎ Removing all Underwater Salvageables around the Island using a Pinchin’ Winch, which requires 2 Ropes, 2 Boards and 1 Cut Stone to craft and requires players to purchase the Blueprint for an Empty Bottle using the Bottle Exchange Tab.

๐ŸŽฎ Killing a naturally spawning Meat Bulb on the Hermit Island. Players will not be able to obtain this task if they plant their own Meat Bulb, meaning that players will have to wait until Spring to complete this task.

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit an Umbrella during the Rain

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit some clothing that provides Insulation during Snowfall

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit a Flower Salad. This can completed every 10 days.

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit a heavy Fallounder, providing the player with an extra Advert which can be used for a Stupefying Lure

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit a heavy Bloomfin Tuna, providing the player with an extra advert for a Rainy Day Lure

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit a heavy Scorching Sunfish, providing the player with an extra advert for a Heavy Weighted Lure

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit a heavy Ice Bream, providing the player with an extra advert for a Snow Day Lure

๐ŸŽฎ Giving the Crabby Hermit 5 heavy Ocean Fishes, excluding the four seasonal fishes

Note: Heavy Ocean Fish must weight more than 70% of its maximum weight, which can be examined using a Pocket Scale which requires 1 Log, 1 Cut Stone and 1 Gold Nugget to craft, needing a Science Machine to prototype.

HOW FRIENDSHIP WITH THE CRABBY HERMIT WORKS

As mentioned, players can increase the amount of friendship they have with the Crabby Hermit by completing unique tasks.

There are a total of 10 levels with the Crabby Hermit, though the different tiers will provide players with different reward.

Players will be able to tell what level friendship they have with the Crabby Hermit from the colour of her text.

Initially the Carbby Hermit’s speech will appear in light pink, but change to light magenta at level 4, light purple at level 8 and her name will change to Pearl at level 10.

At level 10 the Crabby Hermit’s Hermit House will change to Pearl’s Place.

Another hidden easter egg is the fact that Pearl (the Crabby Hermit) will dance with the player if players activate the Dance Emote next to her at level 10.

LEVEL 1

Players will gain access to the Bottle Exhange Tab.

Players will now be able to make the following trades:

Bundle of Thanks for 1 Empty Bottle

Pinchin’ Winch Blueprint for 1 Empty Bottle

Shell Beach Turf Blueprint for 3 Empty Bottles

WHAT IS A BUNDLE OF THANKS?

Players may be confused when they first receive a Bundle of thanks, especially upon first receiving one.

Bundles of Thanks most commonly contain 3 random Shell Bells, having a 40% chance to drop a Soprano Shell Bell, 40% chance to drop an Alto Shell Bell and a 20% chance to drop a Baritone Shell Bell.

The only time a Bundle of Thanks does not drop 3 random Shell Bells is if they are obtained at level 2.

If players complete the Flower task for the Crabby Hermit, they will also receive a piece of Honey in their Bundle of Thanks.

When players receive a Bundle of Thanks at level 2, 4, 5 and 7 they will receive a random lure, each having an equal 25% chance to drop.

Lures received include:

๐ŸŽฃ Rainy Day Lure

๐ŸŽฃ Snow Day Lure

๐ŸŽฃ Stupefying Lure

๐ŸŽฃ Heavy Weight Lure

WHAT IS THE SHELL BELL BUNDLE?

Shell Bell Bundles are obtained when exhanging 1 Empty Bottle with the Crabby Hermit.

Each Shell Bell Bundle contains 4 random Shell Bells with a 40% chance to drop a Soprano Shell Bell, a 40% chance to drop an Alto Shell Bell and a 20% chance to drop a Daritone Shell Bell.

HOW DO I UPGRADE THE HERMIT HOME?

If players are interested in upgrading the Hermit Home they must trade in the following items:

TIER-1 UPGRADE

10 Cookie Cutter Shells (can be found in Salt Formations)

10 Boards (40 Logs)

TIER-2 UPGRADE

10 Marble pieces

10 Ropes (30 Cut Grass)

TIER-3 UPGRADE

5 Moon Rocks

10 Cactus Flowers

WHAT IS PEARL’S PEARL?

Pearl’s Pearl is an item that is obtained when players reach a level 10 friendship with the Crabby Hermit/Pearl.

The only use for Pearl’s Pearl is to be socketed into the Crab King to buff the Crab King so he drops an Inactive Celestial Tribute.

Upon completing the battle with the empowered Crab King, the Crab King will return a Cracked Pearl which can be given back to the Crabby Hermit/Pearl.
