There comes a time where every FFXIV player realizes that the true end game is Glams.
While it’s undeniable that players will spend the majority of the early stages of the game grinding out the Main Story Quest (MSQ), levelling up their jobs in dungeons and FATES as well as trying to figure out if they will give Crafters and Gatherers a shot a good portion of the late-game has players waiting for new content until the next patch is released.
Although Square-Enix releases content for FFXIV very regularly compared to most other video games, depending on how quickly you grind everything out chances are you’re going to see a few months of not knowing what to do with yourself other than completing side quests and grinding out minions or mounts that you left behind along the way.
I have to say, during my down time, I spend a good amount of time perusing the Market Board trying to figure out what Gear I want to buy as I’m way too lazy to farm out dungeons for specific looking Gear sets.
While locating a piece of Gear that looks good on your character is an important aspect of getting your Glam ready, the reality is that it is half of the battle. After locating the piece of Gear you like, players are going to want to take a moment to reflect on whether or not the colour scheme is suitable, especially as there are many pieces of Gear that look good together physically, but don’t have colours that blend.
Luckily for players, there is a good amount of Gear that can be dyed into the various colours on FFXIV, though I will show you shortly how to tell if a piece of Gear can be dyed as it can be very frustrating to purchase an item and then realize that it is not dyeable by any means.
Before I get into how to specifically dye Glamours I’m going to take you through how to properly Glamour a character as depending on how a player goes about dying their Gear, they may waste a Dye, being one of the most frustrating parts of dying if you are unaware.
Note: If you have any questions about FFXIV that you want me to cover feel free to leave them in a comment below, you can also ask me while I am streaming on Twitch, YouTube or in our community discord.
HOW TO UNLOCK/USE THE GLAMOUR DRESSER
In most, if not all cases, players are going to want to always Glamour while using a Glamour Dresser.
Glamour Dressers allow players to freely switch their clothing to presets and will allow players to set their Glamour Plates to automatically appear whenever a player switches onto the selected job.
In my opinion this is the best way of going about your Glamours as not only can you use the same items for multiple sets, but you can dye the same item in different colours so whenever you switch to another class it follows the colour scheme you have in place.
As some Dyes are more rare than others they tend to be more pricy, unless the player is Crafting them on their own. You will want to ensure that your Gear is saved with that colour and in a Glamour Plate so you never have to redye it. If you’re someone who has a never ending supply of Gil you can stress less as most, if not all, dyes are constantly on the Market Board, though depending on what server you’re playing on some dyes may feel inaccessible.
To begin unlocking the ability to Glamour players will have to be Level 15 and far enough into the story to be able to get to Western Thanalan.
Players must locate Swyrgeim (located at X: 12.6 Y: 14.3 in Vesper Bay) in order to accept the Quest “If I Had a Glamour.”
If I Had a Glamour will require players to do the following tasks:
Speak with Folclind, who is nearby.
Deliver the blood orange juice to Swyrgeim.
Players can also complete the Quest “A Self-improving Man” who is provided by Wiscard (located in Mor Dhona X:22.1, Y:6.7), though players will only be able to do one or the other, receiving the same rewards but different story.
To complete Wiscard’s quest players must do the following:
Deliver the leather bag to Rowena.
Speak with Wiscard.
Upon completing either of these quests players will receive the following:
12 Glamour Prisms
1 Green Beret
The ability to Cast Glamour
Glamour Plates
HOW TO MANUALLY GLAMOUR GEAR
As I strongly recommend against Manually Glamouring Gear I’m going to keep this section pretty brief. In my opinion a player should never Glamour an item manually as it becomes quite costly and will only Glamour that item once. While this isn’t usually the biggest problem, if players are using the same Gear on another Job for any particular reason that job will receive the same casted Glamour on that specific piece of Gear.
If players are not worried about this as they don’t share Gear with multiple jobs they can simply right click a piece of Gear and select “Cast Glamour.”
Players will not be able to cast this Glamour again for free and if ever the player wants to use this Glamour again they will need to spend another Glamour Prism. For me it’s not even the cost of the Glamour Prism as much as it’s the fact that you would have to keep that piece of Gear in your Inventory at all times if you would like to reuse it. I’d much prefer throwing it into my Glamour Dresser and forget about it until I need it again.
I also like being able to have as many Glams on hand as possible so I can freely switch whenever I’m bored of my current Glam.
HOW DO GLAMOURS IN THE GLAMOUR DRESSER WORK
After unlocking the rewards from the quests above, players will want to head to the Inn in order to access the Glamour Dresser to save their Glamours in a Glamour Plate. Players will be able to place a Glamour in the Glamour Dresser by moving a piece of Gear into the Dresser using a Glamour Prism.
Glamour Prisms can be purchased from the Market Board for a very reasonable price, though players who have a good amount of Grand Company Seals can also buy them from their Grand Company Leader.
Once a Glam is placed in the Glamour Dresser it will be available for a player to use at any point and if for whatever reason a player wants to retrieve their Glamour from the Dresser they can do so at any point. If a player removes their Glam from the Dresser they will need to use another Glamour Prism to put it back in, though due to the minimal cost, this should never be a problem.
Upon opening the Glamour Dresser, players will be able to see all the Glams they’ve placed inside, being subdivided into the type of Gear (ie. Head, Chest, Belt, etc.) with the option of allowing players to categorize their Glamours for the specific job they will want to Glamour.
It should be noted that some Gear is going to be limited to a single job, some will be locked to a certain Class and some will be meant for all Classes/Jobs. I strongly recommend that players located Glams that are available for all Jobs on the Market Board if you’re going to spend Gil on Glamours. This will allow players to have the most versatility, especially if a piece of Gear looks good on multiple jobs.
Players should also note that if they hope to Glamour a character the Gear level will matter. Jobs cannot be Glamoured with Gear that outlevels them, even if a Glamour Plate is manually assigned to them. Players can still preset these Glamour Plates to the Job and as soon as the Job is levelled up, the Glamour will become active.
The lovely thing is that there are a good amount of Glamours that are Level 1 for all Jobs, which tend to be my choice for Glams, however they can be quite pricy on the Market Board and will require a player to Craft them if they want them “for free.”
The Glamour Dresser isn’t perfect as it does come with some limitations, the main one being that it can only hold 400 items in it. While for me this isn’t the biggest issue there are a number of players who find this limiting as they are Glam Hoarders.
Honestly, I respect Glam Hoarding as there are many dungeons that drop pretty loot and let’s be honest, who has the patience to wait to get that dungeon in a leveling roulette again and hope that the RNG gods both drop that loot again and that you win the need/greed system.
As a player who typically isn’t running low on Gil I don’t really stress about placing Gear in my Glamour Dresser as I can always buy tradeable Gear later. I will typically “try on” a piece of Gear, see if I like it, if I love it I put it into my Glamour Dresser, if I don’t I just Desythesize it.
Players should also be aware that there are two forms of putting Glams into the Glamour Dresser as players have access to the Armoire.
The Armoire has an infinite amount of space, however, players will only be able to put specific Gear into it, often being limited to job specific Gear and Event Gear.
Player will be able to avoid using Glamour Prisms when using the Armoire, so I strongly recommend always checking to see if you can place an item in their before using the Glamour Dresser.
By far the nicest thing about using the Glamour Dresser is the fact that you will be able to see your full outfit before you confirm it. Players will also be able to see their full outfit with Dye Previews to ensure that the outfit looks good with the colour scheme they are going for, but I’ll cover more on that when we talk about Dyes.
HOW TO AUTOMATICALLY LINK GLAMOUR PLATES
Something that I wasn’t aware of for the longest time was the fact that players can link Glamour Plates to job they want to play.
Essentially players will have to head into their “Gear Set List” which can be accessed in the Character menu (C).
Players must open their Gear Sets and right click the Job they would like to alter, choosing “Link to Glamour Plate” which makes switching Glamours so easy to do as anytime a player switches Jobs in an area that allows you to apply Glamours the Glamour will automatically change.
This is especially useful when players are sharing the same Gear on multiple Jobs, particularly when players have all of their Jobs at level 90 that share the same Gear. For me, all my Tanks share the same Glam, but all my Casters have their own, making sure my Black Mage and Red Mage fluidly switch outfits because it would be sacrilege if I ever let my Red Mage wear Black or my Black Mage wear Red.
Players will have to be in a main city in order for this to work as players cannot switch Glamours (even manually) when in combat focussed areas. So while not completely problem free, it’s still going to be much easier than manually applying them.
HOW TO DISPELL OR REMOVE A GLAMOUR
Sometimes players will make the mistake of applying a Glamour on an item they actually didn’t want to Glamour. This often happens when a player has a linked Glamour Plate, but don’t sweat it… it happens and it’s fairly easy to fix.
Players will need to purchase a Glamour Dispeller in order to remove the Glamour of a piece of Gear. Players will want to do this and double check that the Job is no longer connected to the Glamour Plate to ensure that it doesn’t get Glamoured again automatically.
HOW TO UNLOCK THE ABILITY TO DYE GEAR
Similar with the ability to Glamour, players will have to unlock the ability to Dye Gear.
Players will be happy to note that the quest to unlock the ability to Dye Glams is also very short and straight forward, meaning that players will not need to struggle or spend too much tie looking for their objects, which we all know happens in FFXIV.
Players will need to chat with our friend Swyrgeim again in order to begin the quest “Colour Your World” which is located at Western Thanalan (X: 12.6 Y: 14.3).
In order to complete “Colour Your World” players must complete the following task:
Deliver a bottle of orange juice to Swyrgeim.
Players will receive the following rewards:
3 Rose Pink Dye
3 Bone White Dye
3 Ice Blue Dye
The ability to begin Dyeing
HOW TO DYE GEAR
Dyeing Gear works very similar to placing a Glamour on Gear. Players will either want to Dye their Gear before placing it in the Glamour Dresser or can Dye it when it is in a Glamour Plate.
Essentially, I would recommend Dyeing a piece of Gear before it is in a Glamour Plate as it will “permanently” Dye that piece of Gear so anytime it is used that is the colour it appears as. If a player wants that piece of Gear in multiple colours, I would recommend that you Dye the piece of Gear with the most expensive Dye and once it is placed in the correct Glamour Plate use the lesser valued Dye.
Players will be able to “permanently Dye” a piece of Gear in their Glamour Dresser as well, though they must do so in the inventory versus in a Glamour Plate.
If a piece of Gear is removed from a Glamour Plate and it was dyed in the Glamour Plate it will lose its colour, so please be careful of this, especially if you are rotating Glamours. Again, if you have a rare Dye you’re using, I recommend using it in the “inventory” portion of the Glamour Dresser so you don’t have to repurchase an expensive Dye.
In order to Dye an item, players Will have to right click the piece of Gear and hit Dye. In this menu players will be able to preview all the colours they can Dye the Gear.
While players can manually Dye items outside of the Glamour Dresser, I prefer to use the Glamour Dresser because you can test out multiple item’s colours to ensure that everything works together.
Players do not need to possess a Dye to see what an item looks like Dyed, meaning that players can make sure that they like the colour first.
HOW TO BUY DYES OR WHERE TO ACQUIRE DYES
Though Swyrgeim provide players with a decent amount of Dyes, the reality is that these Dyes aren’t the most impressive and to be honest, players are going to want to be aware of the large selection of Dyes available to them.
It should be noted that some colours can be acquired with different types of Dyes, so players will want to double check what Dyes they can use to get the colour they’d like as some Dyes are cheaper or more accessible than others. In my opinion, it would also be a good idea to have a few extra Dyes on hand just in case you want to use them later or need to redye a piece of Gear you changed the colour by mistake.
To get more Dyes players will need to purchase them from Vendors, craft them from Pigments or other means like purchasing them from the Mog Station. The following are the locations Dyes can be obtained:
