Hallowed Nights | Don’t Starve Together Guide

Last Updated January 4, 2021 By Johnny Salib / FlamingGaymer Leave a Comment

It’s October and players are preparing for Halloween, so I thought I would cover the Hallowed Night event that takes place in Don’t Starve Together seemingly every year.

Hallowed Nights is a seasonal event, similar to Winter’s Feast, that features a number of Halloween-themed resources for all players to access, originally spanning between October to November, though seemingly being extended to December in later years.

During the Hallowed Night event, players will witness an alteration to the Don’t Starve Together home page and see a few changes immediately when spawning into a Don’t Starve world, The Constant.

CURRENT AND PREVIOUS DATES FOR THE HALLOWED NIGHTS EVENT

The following is an archive of the dates the Hallowed Nights Event has taken place.

2016: October 18 – November 8

2017: October 30 – December 4

2018: October 25 – December 3

2019: October 24 – December 12

2020: October 22 – TBA

“FREE” SKINS FOR EVERYONE!

Upon starting a new Don’t Starve Together world, players will notice that they have access to a series of skins they did not previously own.

Do not be mistaken, though Klei provides players with a set amount of Halloween-themed skins they are allowed to wear during the event, players will be disappointed to note that the selected skins act very much like a rental, only being available during the Hallowed Night Event.

Upon the conclusion of the Hallowed Nights event, players will no longer be able to select the Halloween-themed skins and will instead need to either make an in-game purchase to use them going forward or will have to obtain them in other means.

To my understanding, players will be able to remain in their chosen skin if they do not take it off before the event ends, though I will confirm whether this is still true at the end of the 2020 event.

If players didn’t have a chance to select a Halloween-theme skin before creating their world or didn’t realize that there was a special skin available to them, they can use a Wardrobe during the Hallowed Nights event in order to switch into one of the available skins.

Similarly, players will be able to make these changes up until the end of the event, though players cannot “dupe the system” by making a clothing set on the last day in hopes of switching back into the skin after the event is concluded.

MAD SCIENTIST LAB

One of the most important features added into the world during the Hallowed Nights Event is the Mad Scientist Lab.

Players will always be able to craft the Mad Scientist Lab using 2 Cut Stone and 2 Electrical Doodads.

The Mad Scientist Lab works very similar to other crafting benches like the Science Machine, providing players with access to a number of crafting recipes that provide players with different types of potions.

It should be noted that players will lose a bit of their Sanity every time they use the Mad Scientist Lab, though this tends to be a fair trade off as all of the potions that can be brewed at the Scientist Lab have positive effects on the player.

The following are all the potion experiments players can craft using the Mad Scientist Lab:

PHOBIC EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECIPE

10 Sanity

1 Gold Nugget

1 Frog Legs

OUTCOME

Upon brewing a Phobic Experiment players will have a 66% chance to receive a Brew of Phobic Abatement and a 33% chance to receive a Brew of Phobic Abrogation.

Both potions will will provide players from Sanity loss that is caused by bats that spawn from chopping down Trees and Chests during the Hallowed Nights event.

The Brew of Phobic Abatement lasts for 4 minutes while the Brew of Phobic Abrogation lasts for 6 minutes.

Note that Totally Normal Bats are specific to the Hallowed Nights event and while there is only a small chance players will be swarmed by the bats, there is a large chance new players will not be able to handle the damage and Sanity loss as players will become unable to move when they are swarmed.

SANGUINE EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECIPE

10 Sanity

1 Red Cap

1 Mosquito

OUTCOME

Upon brewing the the Sanguine Experiment, players will have a 66% chance to receive a Flask of Sanguine Mixture and a 33% chance to receive a Canteen of Sanguine Mixture.

Both potions will provide players Health immediately after being consumed and will continue to provide health to players a bit of health over time.

The Flask of Sanguine Mixture provides players with 8 Health initially and then continues to heal the player with 1 health every 2 seconds for the next minute.

The Canteen of Sanguine Mixture is more powerful, providing players with 20 Health immediately after consuming and providing players with 1 health every 2 seconds for the next minute.

The Flask of Sanguine Mixture provides a total of 38 Health while the Canteen of Sanguine Mixture provides a total of 50 Health.

It should be noted that Wormwood cannot receive the initial health provided from either of these potions, however, he will still gain the 30 Health that is provided over time.

PSYCHOSIS EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECIPE

10 Sanity

1 Crow

1 Dark Petals

OUTCOME

Upon brewing the Psychosis Experiment, players will have a 66% chance to receive a Dram of Psychic Fortitude and a 33% chance to receive a Tumblerful of Psychic Fortitude.

The Dram of Psychic Fortitude will provide players with 5 Sanity upon consuming and then will continue to restore 1 Sanity every 2 seconds for the next minute.

The Tumblerful of Psychic Fortitude will provide players with 15 Sanity upon consuming and then will continue to restore 1 Sanity every 2 seconds for the next minute.

The Dram of Psychic Fortitude provides a total of 35 Sanity and the Tumblerful of Psychic Fortitude provides a total of 45 Sanity.

SULFURIC EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECIPE

10 Sanity

1 Rotten Egg

1 Charcoal

OUTCOME

Upon brewing the Sulfuric Experiment, players have a 50% chance to receive Sulfuric Crystals of Lime and a 50% chance to receive a Sulfuric Crystals of Saltpeter.

The Sulfuric Experiment is the least useful experiment to brew in the Mad Scientist Lab as all they do are create particle effects when thrown into a fire.

It should be noted that the Sulfuric Crystals of Lime and Sulfuric Crystals of Saltpeter cause different particle effects and the Sulfuric Crystals of Lime will fuel a Campfire for 45 seconds or a Fire Pit for 90 seconds.

ARBORETUM EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECIPE

20 Sanity

1 Living Log

1 Batilisk Wing

OUTCOME

Upon brewing the Arboretum Experiment, players can only receive a single reward, being a Totally Normal Root.

Totally Normal Roots can be planted in hopes of growing a a Totally Normal Tree, which can be decorated using Halloween Decorations.

For players who are unaware as to what Totally Normal Trees are, they’re actually a tree that can rarely be found in the Forest Biome.

When chopped down a Totally Normal Tree will drop 2 Living Logs and will also provide players an additional Living Log if players dig up its stump.

Players will also have a 25% chance to receive an additional chance to receive a Clean Sweeper which will allow players to change the skin of objects and characters around them.

Most notably, the Clean Sweeper is used to chance Wilson’s Beard and Webber’s Beard.

I would strongly recommend crafting yourself a number of Arboretum Experiments as players can always benefit from having Living Logs around their base, especially for higher tier weapons.

Don’t Starve Together is actually the only game which has a renewable way to farm Totally Normal Trees so take advantage of it every Hallowed Nights Event, even if you just hoard a bunch of Totally Normal Roots.

LUNAR EXPERIMENT

CRAFTING RECEIPE

10 Sanity

1 Moon Moth Wing

1 Lune Tree Blossom

OUTCOME

Upon Brewing a Lunar Experiment players will have a 50% chance to receive 1 Steeped Lunar Essence, a 33% chance to receive 2 Steeped Lunar Essences and a 20% chance to receive 3 Steeped Lunar Essences.

The Steeped Lunar Essence is another interesting potion as it has the ability to convert any item or mob into its Lunar counterpart.

Transformations include:

Butterflies into Moon Moths

Saplings into Lunar Saplings

Carrots into Carrats

Dragonfruit into Saladmanders

Spiders, Spider Warriors, Cave Spiders, Spitters and Dangling Depths Dwellers into Shattered Spiders

Hounds into Horror Hounds

Pengulls into Moonrock Pengulls

The most beneficial use of the Lunar Experiment is converting Butterflies into Moon Moths as this can help players create a Lunar Tree farm.

Players should try to place a Lunar Tree next to a homeless Bee in hopes of allowing it to propagate trees naturally.

HALLOWEEN TRINKETS

With the Hallowed Nights event comes the addition of exclusive Halloween Trinkets that will be scattered around the world, similar to the regular trinkets.

Unlike regular Trinkets, Halloween Trinkets can be traded into the Pig King for 8 Halloween Candies each.

Halloween Trinkets can be stacked into groups of 40, though players will realistically need to craft themselves a number of chests or a Candy Bag to contain all the Trinkets players are going to get. Either that or players are going to have to make regular visits to the Pig King, if not base right beside him.

There are a total of 15 Halloween Trinkets, including:

Broken Stake

Cubic Zirkonia Ball

Empty Elixir

Faux Fangs

Paw Monkey

Spider Ring

Binoculars

Lone Glove

Snail Scale

Goop Canister

Toy Cobra

Crocodile Toy

Broken Terrarium

Odd Radio

Broken Hairdryer

As a hidden easter eggs, players can place a Halloween Trinket near a Catcoon and witness the Catcoon begin playing with it, similar to how a cat would play with any of your belongings in real life.

There is no benefit to allowing a Catcoon play with Halloween Trinkets other than using them as a distraction so you can take aim and kill them faster.

Catcoons aren’t the most difficult creatures to defeat as it is and will often get distracted by nearby butterflies or other living creatures.

HALLOWEEN CANDIES

As mentioned, players will receive Halloween Candies when turning in Halloween Trinkets to the Pig King, however, players will also receive 5 Halloween Candies for every successful trade made to the Pig King.

Players will receive more Halloween Candies if they are wearing a costume skin during the Hallowed Nights, essentially making it more enticing for players to select a Halloween-themed skin for the whole event.

Candies, similar to Halloween Trinkets, will stack up to 40 and are especially enticing for players to collect as they have no spoilage.

I’ve even seen players collect hundreds of Halloween Candies and leave them inside of Chests so they can easily snack on them throughout the remained of the year.

There are a total of 14 Halloween Candies, including:

It should be noted that not all players will be able to eat every candy as a few characters have dietary needs.

For example, Wigfrid will refuse to eat any foods that resemble fruits or vegetables, though Wigfrid will be the first to want to taste that sweet sweet candy.

Characters like Wurt will still get buffs from candies that are Veggies and characters like Wormwood will still be unable to heal from foods like candy.

Realistically, candy isn’t a crucial addition to the Don’t Starve world, but really, who would want to say no to free items that can keep you sane or healed up, especially when you are running low on other resources to keep you up.

Again, the absolute most appealing thing to candy is the fact that they never spoil.

Alternatively, players can also feed Pigs candy in hopes of gaining stacks of Manure.

Wormwood players will appreciate the massive amounts of Manure they can collect when feeding Pigs the sweet stuff. Although, the reality is that all players will befit from feeding Pigs the sweet stuff as it can be a very easy way to set up a plethora of Improved Farms to keep them full all year round.

CANDY WIGFRID CANNOT EAT

As I am a Wigfrid main, typically, I thought I would share the list of candy she cannot eat.

I would strongly recommend not picking up these candies or leaving them for some one else to pick up, because damn is it annoying to try to eat something that Wigfrid doesn’t eat.

The following are all the candy choices Wigfrid will not eat:

Not-So-Candy Corn

Raisins

“Raisins”

Lava Peppers

I HAVE TOO MUCH CANDY OR TRINKETS AND NOWHERE TO PUT THEM, WHAT SHOULD I DO?

The one thing about the Hallowed Nights event that frustrates me is how much crap you collect along the way.

As mentioned, while Trinkets and Candy stacks in groups of 40 each, the reality is that players will be collecting huge amounts of both.

Luckily for players, during the Hallowed Nights event they will have access to a new crafting recipe, being the Candy Bag.

Candy Bags are always available and can be found in the Survival Tab. Players will need to fork over 6 Cut Grass in order to obtain one.

The Candy Bag acts fairly similar to a regular Backpack, though Candy Bags can carry a maximum of 20 stacks of Candies, Trinkets and/or decorations.

Players will not be able to put in any regular items into a Candy Bag, so don’t get deluded into believing that you discovered a way to “break the game,” because you’re going to be very disappointed.

HALLOWEEN DECORATIONS

For players who like to get into the Halloween spirit by decorating, get pumped because you can decorate Totally Normal Trees with one of the following 6 decorations:

Bat Decoration

Crow Decoration

Dangling Depth Dweller Decoration

Ghost Decoration Spider Decoration

Tentacle Decoration

Players will be able to find Decorations in a variety of ways, including finding them scattered around the world, harvesting Tumbleweeds, or digging up Graves.

Similar to all the other Hallowed Nights additions, players will be able to stack a total of 40 of each decoration, however, unlike Candy, players will not be able to trade decorations with the Pig King.

Frustrating. Completely frustrating.

Reason? You’re going to end up with a number of these decorations and without a Totally Normal Tree, you’re going to have a big mess in your base, or a Chest filled with these knicknacks.

CAN I PLAY WITH HALLOWED NIGHTS SETTINGS OUTSIDE OF THE EVENT?

Absolutely! The Hallowed Nights Events is actually one of the only events Klei will allow players to revisit, simply because of the amount of resources it provides players.

Players can access the Hallowed Nights in the Events setting while in the world creation menu.

While players will have access to the majority of Halloween supplies provided from the Hallowed Nights events, they will still not be able to access the exclusive Halloween-themed skins.
