I don’t think anyone is surprised that I’m covering yet another portion of Cult of the Lamb, given how addicted I am to it and how much of my Twitch Community has hopped on board with it.
At this point, I’ve finished the game 4 times, once for each difficulty to see what the major differences between them are and while I’ve already completed the game, I really want to play it again and hopefully get my community involved with Twitch integration.
Honestly, it’s great to have a game that I feel so passionate about and to have a game that has so much replayability, especially on release.
While I’m sure that Cult of the Lamb is going to keep getting updates, as it already has, I don’t see them making any changes to the core way the game works, meaning that any strategies you already have to min-max are going to be in place in the future.
Though I can’t say that players will need to min-max for the easier game modes, the tougher game modes can get frustrating, especially if you are newer to Management or Dungeon Crawling games. Now, as I’ve mentioned before, Cult of the Lamb isn’t the most difficult game, so I would not discourage players from attempting higher-difficulty content as the game should be manageable, especially if you are good at getting all of the important upgrades back at your base using the Shrine Skill Tree and the Crown Abilities Skill Tree.
The reality is that the Shrine Skill Tree will fuel the Crown Abilities Skill Tree, but no matter what the Crown Abilities Skill Tree will take a bit more time.
The main reason I bring up the Skill Trees is the fact that both will require players to generate Loyalty with their Followers in order to complete, probably being the main reason you’re here reading this guide. So, without further ado, let me cover all the ways you can collect Loyalty and what I personally think are the best options for players. I will cover all the different options you will have and tell you the benefits and the negatives of making each option.
HOW DO YOU LEVEL UP A FOLLOWER
Levelling up a Follower requires players to raise their Loyalty or Devotion. A Followers Loyalty/Devotion is shown by the bar above their head whenever a player walks up to them and will progressively require more of these stats in order to Level Up.
As a Follower Levels up their name will state what Level they are for example if we have Charlie, Charlie will become Charlie II, Charlie III, up to an unlimited amount of levels.
For those of you who are not used to Roman Numerals the following is a cheat sheet:
I = One
V = Five
X = Ten
If an I appears before a letter, this means one less, so IV means 4 and IX means 9.
DAILY SERMONS & TEMPLE ACTIVITIES
Although it doesn’t provide players with a great amount of Devotion, one of the most important activities players can do is lead a Sermon. In my opinion, it’s going to be important to run Sermons no matter how many Followers you have as it’s the only way to level up your Crown Skill Tree.
The great thing about Sermons is that you will get more towards your Crown Skill Tree the higher level your Followers are, which is the main reason both stats work so hand in hand.
Many of the other Rituals players can run in the Temple will provide Followers with more Loyalty, though not all of them. That being said, players will not be able to rely on Rituals for Loyalty because of the cooldowns
FOLLOWER ACTIONS
Players can unlock a variety of Follower actions, though all of these will be tied to Doctrines. I strongly recommend you check out my guide on Doctrines as some of them will be better for you in the long run than others, but the ones that will give you Loyalty are the following:
Bless
Inspire (which takes over Bless)
Intimidate (which takes over Bless)
Bribe
In my opinion, the choice between Inspire and Intimidate is going to be up to you. I prefer to Inspire because it gives a bigger boost, but Intimidate will make sure you get enough resources a bit faster.
Players should also note that enforcing a new Doctrine will also boost Loyalty, but this isn’t something you can repeat after you’ve learned all the Doctrines.
No matter what Doctrines a player chooses, players should try to remain adamant about completing the actions daily as this is going to greatly help you on your adventures.
ALWAYS COMPLETE QUESTS
Every so often players will be met with a quest from their Followers. These are completely random and can range from having you look for more Followers, pranking Followers, killing Followers and the list goes on and on.
I strongly suggest that you complete every single quest that becomes available to you, even if it’s negative.
While players may want to opt out and lose Faith instead of completing more obscure Quests, I strongly recommend that players take the quests instead because of the massive boost you’ll get in Loyalty. Realistically players can get about half a level from every quest they complete for a Follower, which is typically better than most other ways of getting Loyalty.
FEED YOUR FOLLOWERS MEALS
By the mid-to-late game players will unlock 3-star Meals that will provide them with the chance to gain Follower Loyalty.
Some meals will provide players with 100% chance of gaining Loyalty. For these meals, I strongly recommend that you feed your Cult fully, whether it’s with regular meals or a Ritual so that you can select your favourite Follower to gain 100% Loyalty.
If you have automated Farms and a ton of Offering Shrines you should always be able to make food that will boost your Follower’s Loyalty and I strongly recommend that these are the only Meals you make in the late-game as it becomes really important that you have your Followers up, especially if you have the Demonic Summoning Circle and need some extra assistance in battle.
GIFT YOUR FOLLOWERS
There are a few different gifts players can provide their Followers, some of these are necklaces that will keep Followers up all night, or provide them with more Loyalty, though there are also Small and Big Gift Boxes players can provide players.
No matter what the gift is, players will get a boost to Loyalty, though players can loot a dead body to get their gift back.
I would strongly recommend that players only do this if all of their Followers are asleep, though players will be happy to note that if they resurrect a Follower the Followers will respawn with their gifts.
While gifts are randomly obtained on Dungeon Crawling adventures, I have to say they’re actually pretty common and I was able to provide my whole Cult (which always had around 50 Followers at a time) with gifts.
Note: You will only be able to provide a single gift to a Follower as after the gift is given the prompt will go away, even if you have more gifts to give.
WHAT DO YOU GET FOR LEVELLING UP A FOLLOWER
Players will get a great deal of Devotion for levelling a Follower making it possible to get Divine Inspiration faster for their Shrine Skill Tree. Not only this, but players will get a Commandment Fragment, which can be used to enforce new Doctrines. As mentioned a number of times in this blog, Doctrines are going to be the most important element of the game when it comes to managing the way your Cult functions and though none will make or break your Cult, some will make it much easier to complete different tasks than others.
As players will struggle with different things, the option will always be up to you, but in my opinion, there’s kind of a built-in “meta” when choosing Doctrines as some resources like Coins just become way too easy to get.
Players will also gain benefits from a levelled-up Follower, such as faster work speeds, a higher chance at getting rewards from the Missionary, more devotion to the Crown Ability Tree as well as more powerful Demonic powers.
TIPS FOR LEVELLING UP A FOLLOWER QUICKLY
One of the most important things I can recommend to players is to focus on what a Follower’s pros and Cons are, for example, some Followers will be better at getting Devotion using the Shrine while others will be happier Farming. Although Followers will kind of do whatever they want whenever they have nothing to do, naming your Followers based on their perks will be a helpful way of ensuring that they are maximizing their ability to get Loyalty and reap the most rewards as you can.
Though I say this, I’ll be honest… I just sent any Follower to do anything and ended up having an average of 50 Followers at all times, so don’t sweat it if you’re also a lazy person.
I strongly recommend that no matter what a player makes sure their Followers are always working and there are even some Doctrines that will allow a Follower to gain more loyalty while working, so always take these.
Essentially, if you see something that will passively build up Loyalty or any Doctrines that mention that it will boost your Loyalty, these are typically the better options to choose as Loyalty is the only resource/skill that never caps and makes it far into the late game.
