When playing any Survival Game planting is one of the most important tasks a player can have as the ability to grow their own resources helps cut down the amount of time it would take to farm specific resources.
While Grounded takes a pretty different approach to planting in my opinion, I have to say that it’s equally as important in Grounded as it would be in any other video game.
The cool thing about planting in Grounded is that players will be able to plant basic foods and will be able to plant a few different resources that are used for construction or resources that are required for a variety of recipes.
For me, planting in Grounded was most important when it came to building as I never have enough time to balance out grinding out BURG.L missions, grinding out the resources to build my necessary items/tools, farm food and build. This is especially true when I’m live streaming on Twitch as I try to focus on exploration and labs in order to make sure stream is as entertaining as possible.
Now the use of the Garden Patch is going to be different for each person depending on the resources they need, however, as the Garden Patch does not have too many options for things to grow there are going to be resources a player tends to plant more than others.
The following guide will take you through everything you need to know about the Garden Patch and planting in general so you have a good idea of the resources you can farm and what you can do with this station.
HOW TO UNLOCK THE GARDEN PATCH
The Garden Patch is quite easy to unlock and ultimately most players will unlock it without thinking about it. Players will be able to unlock the Garden Patch as soon as they have a Hammer as all they need to do is analyze an Acorn Top at a Field Station.
Although in the early game there aren’t very many things that are useful in a Garden Patch for you to grow, I would still recommend constructing a number of them and by the end game I would recommend at least 6 at each base you have unless you have a quick way to transport the resources collected to other bases such as Ziplines.
HOW DO YOU CONSTRUCT A GARDEN PATCH?
Garden Patches are constructed with the following resources:
8 Crude Rope
6 Weed Stems
1 Acorn Top
1 Spoiled Meat
All of these resources are generally easy to farm out, especially if you have a Spinning Wheel that makes 1 Crude Rope for 1 Plant Fiber, though newer players may not know what Spoiled Meat is unless they were unlucky enough to discover it on their first few days of exploration.
Essentially Spoiled Meat requires players to allow any of their live resources such as Aphids, Weevils, Gnats or anything else that can be cooked to rot. These foods all have a little gauge next to them which shows how fresh they are. When this gauge is depleted the resource will ultimately change into Spoiled Meat.
Players should note that they can Spoiled Meat from uncooked or cooked variants of these resources, though neither of these seem to spoil faster so just let your meats expire naturally in my opinion.
WHAT CAN YOU GROW AND PLANT IN THE GARDEN PATCH?
While there are a number of resources you can plant in the Garden Patch, there are actually not many things that can be obtained from the Garden Patch.
Players will be able to plant Clover Leaves, Plant Fiber, Sprigs, Grass Seeds, Mushrooms, Mushroom Chunks and Toadstool Chunks.
The following are all the yields the resources will give.
A Clover Leaf provides 3 Clover Leaves.
A Plant Fiber provides 4 Plant Fiber.
A Sprigs provide 4 Sprigs.
A Grass Seed provides 3 Grass Plants and Plant Fiber.
A Mushroom provides 4 Mushrooms.
A Mushroom Chunk provides 3 Mushroom Chunks.
A Toadstool Chunk provides 3 Toadstool Chunks.
Now, while these are the base amounts that players will appear from retrieving resources from the Garden Patch, players will be able to receive more either randomly or by ensuring that they get their Green Thumb up. I will cover this shortly.
WHAT DOES FERTILIZER DO?
Fertilizer is essentially a resource players can use in order to decrease the amount of time it takes for whatever they are planting in the Garden Patch to grow. Typically, I use Fertilizer only for construction materials, though if you’re running low on anything else it may be worth pulling out some Fertilizer to get the resource quickly.
Players will need to use Spoiled Meat in order to fertilize plants. As mentioned, Spoiled Meat comes from any of the food resources such as Roasts and their Raw Form, however, cannot be made from Jerkies or anything dried. In most cases players will collect enough Spoiled Meat from leaving their food on the Roasting Spit for too long. If the food expires while on the spit it will land on the floor, allowing a player to simply pick it up. Otherwise, players can leave the Meat (Raw or Roasted) in a chest or in their inventory to use later.
Now, every resource you try to grow in the Garden Patch has a different timer, meaning that some will take very little time to grow in comparison to others. For me, I only Fertilize Toadstool Chunks or Grass Seeds, especially if I am building, however, if my main focus is not building in that moment I allow things to grow at the speed that they would normally grow.
Players can place up to a maximum of 5 Fertilizer in a Garden Patch at a time.
Note: This section is only about Rotten Food which shortens the time it takes for plants to grow, I will cover Rotten Food which affects Green Thumb chance in the next section.
The following are all of the timers for each resource you can grow:

WHAT IS GREEN THUMB?
Green Thumb is essentially a way for players to farm more resources from a single yield of resources. Players will never be able to gain 100% Green Thumb ratings, however, they are able to raise the chances quite a bit higher.
In reality, I don’t think that Green Thumb is very balanced as the resources you gain are quite frankly not nearly as impressive as one would think.
Essentially if Green Thumb actually triggers players will be guaranteed the following rewards:
Clover Leaves simply look different but they drop the same amount of resources when chopped.
Plant Fiber only grows into Grass Stumps providing 5 Plant Fiber Each, this being pretty worth it if you’re trying to farm Plant Fiber.
Sprigs grow into a special variant that requires an Axe to chop and will provide you with 4 Sprigs instead.
Grass Seeds grow into taller Grass which will drop 5 Grass Planks as well as 5 Plant Fiber.
Mushrooms grow into a Large Mushroom which will instead drop 1 Mushroom Chunk.
Mushroom Chunks grow into Larger Mushrooms but still drop the same amount of resources.
Toadstool Chunks grow into Larger Mushrooms but still drop the same amount of resources.
Given the fact that many of these resources simply turn into alternative cosmetics players will only want to use Spoiled Food to decorate their base with Garden Patches or will only want to grow the following resources using them:
Plant Fiber
Sprigs
Grass Seeds
