Recently while streaming on Twitch I’ve been gearing towards playing more story based games, simply because I don’t often allow myself the freedom to play story based games on my time off.
Last year the only story based game I actually played was LostWinds and while that experience was great, I can’t tell you just how moving playing through GRIS was for me, though you can watch my 2-Part Blind Play Through here and here.
While playing GRIS can be a bit difficult at points, what I didn’t notice was that there were so many achievements and hidden achievements players could unlock while playing the game, leading me to want to play through the game multiple times in order to fully complete any of the parts that I missed the first time around.
There are a total of 17 achievements players can collect while adventuring through GRIS though the reality is that only 5 of the achievements are guaranteed if players are successful in completing the game, while the other achievements will either require players to take more effort to unlock them or stumble across them.
There are X types of achievements being:
Story Achievements
Level Achievements
The 5 Stages of Grief
Mementos Collector
Childhood
The following guide will take you through all of the achievements players can unlock in GRIS and what these achievements will unlock.
Please note that this does mean storyline spoilers, though I’m sure you already assumed that being that you looked up a complete guide.
STORY ACHIEVEMENTS
Story Achievements are the easiest achievements players can unlock in the game as all they only require a player to progress through the main story.
Story Achievements are based off of the 4 areas players can enter in the game, each being classified by a colour.
The following are all of the story achievements players can complete:
RED
The Red achievement is received by players after they complete chapter 1.
GREEN
The Green achievement is received by players after they complete chapter 2.
BLUE
The Blue achievement is received by players after they complete chapter 3.
YELLOW
The Yellow achievement is received by players after they complete chapter 4.
THE END
The End achievement is received by players after they complete chapter 5, the final chapter.
LEVEL ACHIEVEMENTS
The Level achievements shockingly do not relate to completing levels, however, they do relate to achievements they can unlock from either locating hidden objects in the game or by completing mechanics in the game perfectly.
The 5 hidden achievements that relate to Level Achievements include:
Sandstorm
Inuksuit
Apples
Eel
Magic Fowls
The following is a walkthrough of all the Level Achievements players can unlock while playing GRIS:
SANDSTORM
In Chapter 2 players will begin experiencing Sandstorms. Sandstorms are often countered with using the ability Heavy, though if players wish to get the Sandstorm achievement, they will actually have to avoid being blown away by a Sandstorm altogether while trying to walk through Chapter 2.
The Sandstorm achievement is definitely an achievement I would recommend trying to complete after your first play through as players will have to get used to the mechanics of the Sandstorm and may simply want to progress through their game the first time with no complication.
Although Sandstorms are inevitable as a mechanic, players will be happy to note that they will be able to hide behind or inside of buildings to become immune from storms.
Players are also immune to Sandstorm when they use the ability “Heavy” making it fairly easy to obtain if players avoid being blown away before having this ability.
INUKSUIT
The Inuksuit is an achievement I’m a bit shocked I didn’t get on my first play though as unsurprisingly I made it my goal to completely destroy everything .
There are a total of 14 Inuksuits players must destroy in order to obtain this achievement.
Players can begin this mission from the second checkpoint of the second chapter in order to complete it.
The following are all of the locations of the Inuksuits:
INUKSUIT #1
INUKSUIT #2
INUKSUIT #3
INUKSUIT #4
INUKSUIT #5
INUKSUIT #6
INUKSUIT #6
INUKSUIT #7
INUKSUIT #8
INUKSUIT #9
INUKSUIT #10
INUKSUIT #11
INUKSUIT #12
INUKSUIT #13 & 14
APPLES
Chapter 3, being one of my favourite chapters, features a section where Gris meets an adorable apple eating friend and must use Heavy on trees in order to feed it apples.
There are a total of 8 apples, however the reality is that there are 4 hidden apples that players must find in order to complete this achievement. The others should be quite simple to find.
In order to complete the Apples achievement players must start at the beginning of Chapter 3.
The following are all the locations for apples that players can find:
APPLE #1
APPLE #2 & 3
APPLE #4
APPLE #5
APPLE #6
APPLE #7
APPLE #8
EEL
The Eel achievement is both one of the easiest and hardest achievements to obtain as it does not require players to do anything technically other than avoid all attacks from the Giant Eel.
Giant Eel attacks can be successfully dodged whenever the Eel tries to inhale the player by waiting a bit and pressing their move button again in order to dodge.
There are two encounters that a player will experience in regards to Eel attacks and players will be required to dodge both.
MAGIC FOWLS
In chapter 5 players will learn how to sing and will be able to awaken flowers and locate Magic Fowls which are peacock looking birds, which the player will first see when learning the skill.
There are a total of 7 hidden birds that players can locate in the game and the following are all of their locations:
MAGIC FOWLS #1 & 2
These Magic Fowls are obtained immediately after learning how to sing.
MAGIC FOWL #3
MAGIC FOWL #4
MAGIC FOWL #5
MAGIC FOWL #6
MAGIC FOWL #7
THE 5 STAGES OF GRIEF
The 5 Sages of Grief Achievements are linked to the different emotional aspects of the game that a player will be able to explore and are connected to the 5 different colours and 5 Chapters of GRIS.
There is a single achievement in every chapter of GRIS and some of them are easier to locate than others.
The following are all of locations for the 5 Stages of Grief achievements in order for the player to enjoy all the cutscenes available to them.
DENIAL
Denial requires players to walk to the right of the area until they are able to move freely.
Upon being able to control Gris, players must backtrack, heading left until they locate a statue.
Here players must leave their keyboard or controller alone, allowing Gris to fall to the ground and get up by herself.
ANGER
In Chapter 2 when players reach the second checkpoint they will be met by a number of statues some of which a player can destroy.
There are 3 fragile statues that players can use “Heavy” on in order to shatter.
Upon breaking all three, players will unlock the Anger achievement.
It’s important that a player does not use Heavy on nothing as if they do so they will be ejected from the area.
BARGAINING
Bargaining is a bit of an odd achievement to unlock as players are going to need to be aware of a skill that they can unlock in the later stages of the game.
Bargaining requires players to locate the statue covering it’s face in Chapter 3 checkpoint 2 and will be required to try to sing to it, obviously not being able to since the ability is still locked.
DEPRESSION
Depression was one of the most moving cut scenes I unlocked in GRIS as it requires players to search through the darkness and locate a Turtle in Chapter 4 at checkpoint 2.
Players will have to make their way to the left in order to be covered by complete Darkness, unlocking this magnificent achievement.
ACCEPTANCE
I got chills even writing the name of this achievement as the final scenes of GRIS are some of the most impactful in the game.
Upon getting ready to complete the game, players will locate a tomb that they must sing in front of.
MEMENTOS COLLECTOR
In order to collect the Mementos achievement, players must do just that!
There are between 2-7 Mementos in each area for players to discover, though some of them are trickier to locate and obtain than others, leading players to need to repeat certain of the game a few times in order to collect.
I strongly recommend focussing on this achievement over any of the others as collecting all of the Mementos will unlock a new hidden portion of the game.
The following are all of the locations for Mementos in GRIS:
MEMENTO #1 – CHAPTER 1 (MEMENTO 1/2)
The first memento is located on the way to the third star piece players have to locate in order to advance through the main story.
Players will have to climb up the pillar and instead of continuing up the staircase will have to fall to the left after they cross the white platform in order to land on the opposite side of the pillar.
After collecting this memento players can head to the right in order to continue progressing the main story.
MEMENTO #2 – CHAPTER 1 (MEMENTO 2/2)
Unfortunately this memento cannot be obtained in the first chapter and instead players will need to actually acquire this memento in the final chapter of the story.
MEMENTO #3 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 1/7)
The third memento requires players to enter chapter 2 and make their way across the map and down the hill until they reach the title screen.
Upon reaching the title screen players will have to jump down to the right of the screen and once they are all the way down.
Once on the ground players will need to begin heading to the left of the screen until they are met with the third memento.
Although it may seem like the area is sealed, players will be able to slip behind the stone pillar in order to reach the third memento without any difficulty.
MEMENTO #4 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 2/7)
Memento 5 requires a bit of skill and speed to collect as players will have to make their way up the moving rock in order to fall down to the hole on the right in order to collect the memento.
Players have a limited amount of time as if they way too long the fifth memento will be locked and can no longer be obtained unless players return to this area.
Players should have enough time for a single hesitation while making their way up, however, if they hesitate for too long they will be locked out.
It is optimal for players to begin making their way up the moving rock as soon as it starts moving in order to maximize the time they have.
MEMENTO #5 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 3/7)
After receiving the skill “Heavy” players must make their way to the left of the screen and retrace their steps.
Upon reaching the furthest left point on the map players will have to jump until they are on top of a piece of broken rocks.
Players must use the Heavy ability and drop down in order to unlock this Memento.
MEMENTO #6 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 4/7)
The sixth Memento can be a bit difficult to get as it will require players to parkour all the way to the top of the steel structures.
Upon making it to the top, players must stand until the wind blows them to the left in order to obtain the sixth Memento.
Players can also jump while the wind is blowing in order to use the wind to push them towards the Memento, however, this can risk the player falling off the leftmost platform.
The strategy a player takes will depend on which they find easier.
MEMENTO #7 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 5/7)
The seventh memento can be a bit difficult to navigate as it will require players to use Heavy on either side of the metal structure.
Players will first need to tip the structure on the left in order to make their way up to the star piece, however, upon receiving the star piece they will have to tip the structure back in order to jump to the left and proceed up the Windmill.
Players can then make their way to the top of the structure in order to obtain the seventh memento.
MEMENTO #8 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 6/7)
The eighth memento can be a bit tricky to spot as it will require players to fall off the right edge of a platform in order to trigger a hidden sprocket that will open and allow players to walk down.
Players will be able to walk down in order to obtain the memento and then will be able to walk back up once that is complete.
MEMENTO #9 – CHAPTER 2 (MEMENTO 7/7)
Memento nine is another challenging memento to get as it will require players to use Heavy on the weather balloon until it is at it’s lowest point.
I would recommend using Heavy at the right most side of the weather balloon as this will give players the best chance of being able to run up the rightmost tower in order to jump onto the top rung of the weather balloon.
Players must then jump to the left and use heavy on the piece of rock in order to spread it and make their way to the ninth memento.
Players can then slide down the ramp in order to progress.
MEMENTO #10 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 1/7)
The first memento requires players to complete a small jumping challenge amongst the trees.
For this jumping challenge players must wait for the trees to grow their leaves in order to get to the leftmost side.
This challenge is not that tricky to complete.
MEMENTO #11 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 2/7)
This jumping challenge will take players a bit of time to figure out as it will require players to head as high as they can and float to the left of the screen in order to obtain the eleventh memento.
Players must note that red trees will change their foliage any time they jump meaning that players must try to ensure that trees are bare before they jump on them in order to properly land.
MEMENTO #12 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 3/7)
The twelfth memento can be difficult to spot as it requires players to locate a pot that has red birds in it.
Players must smash this pot by using heavy and then take the red birds up to locate the memento.
Fairly plain and simple from there on out.
MEMENTO #13 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 4/7)
Players will easily be able to access the this area by heading to the right and using Heavy on the broken ground in order to acquire the memento.
Players may assume that this area is unreachable due to the pillars being a solid colour, though players will be happy to note that they can simply walk behind them in order to reach the area with the broken ground.
Players will fall through the ground and will be able to get back up using red birds.
MEMENTO #14 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 5/7)
Memento fourteen was one that frustrated me a lot, simply because I could see it but couldn’t figure out how to get it.
I’m ashamed to say that it is much simpler to get than you would expect as memento 14 simply requires players to jump during a gust of wind from the bird in order to be blown to the platform that has the memento on the right.
Players can either jump off the tree or off the platform to the left of the tree depending on how they time it.
MEMENTO #15 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 6/7)
Memento fifteen requires players to do a bit more exploring and timing as it requires to jump up to the left instead of the right.
Players must take the birds that are in the water in order to gain enough of heigh to get over the pillar to the left.
MEMENTO #16 – CHAPTER 3 (MEMENTO 7/7)
The sixteenth memento is a bit tricky to catch as it will require players to jump on the tree above and continue down the path, jumping on the water tree next until they get all the way to the memento.
This memento is a bit difficult to get to if players struggle with parkour and will require the player to glide quite a bit.
MEMENTO #17 – CHAPTER 4 (MEMENTO 1/5)
When players are jumping on mushrooms they will notice the top mushroom on the left has some red particles whenever they jump on it.
Players must use Heavy on this mushroom in order to summon the red birds in order to soar to the next memento.
MEMENTO #18 – CHAPTER 4 (MEMENTO 2/5)
When players have learned how to swim, they must head down into the depths of the ocean to find a hidden path.
Similar to the pillars above, players may not think that they can enter this section, however, there is a hidden path to the right that features a memento.
MEMENTO #19 – CHAPTER 4 (MEMENTO 3/5)
The nineteenth memento is a bit tricky to find, however, once players collect the star piece under the castle they will unlock a shortcut.
To the left of the shortcut are some red birds that players must use in order to get the next memento.
They must take the entrance to the left of this area and take a windy path in order to jump from higher.
MEMENTO #20 – CHAPTER 4 (MEMENTO 4/5)
The following is the location players must locate in order to find the twentieth memento.
This memento can be difficult to locate as it is found in the dark.
Continuing heading to the left and you will find it!
MEMENTO #21 – CHAPTER 4 (MEMENTO 5/5)
When players have progressed through the light puzzles they will locate an area that seems to be a bit darker/more black then the rest.
Players will have to stick close to the wall to the right in order to access it.
MEMENTO #22 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 1/7)
Memento twenty two will require players to jump to the top of the pillar that is revealed with light.
Players must make their way to the top and wait until it fully disappears in order to take the red birds up higher.
MEMENTO #23 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 2/7)
To acquire memento twenty three, players must head to the left in order to find it.
MEMENTO #24 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 3/7)
In order to get memento twenty four, players must head to the left of the two pillars.
Similar to some mementos from before, players may not realize they can actually move through these pillars, though since they are in the forefront they will allow players to pass behind.
Passing through these pillars will illuminate an area below that Gris can walk across.
MEMENTO #25 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 4/7)
In order to get memento twenty five, players must jump down to illuminate this area in order to reveal some more pillars they can land on.
I promise you’re not jumping into nothing!
MEMENTO #26 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 5/7)
The twenty sixth memento can be difficult to collect without a bit of help as it will require players to run down a ledge in order to find some red birds that take you back to where you started.
Instead of going all the way up, players will have to use Heavy in order to stop themselves in order to jump to the memento.
MEMENTO #27 – CHAPTER 5 (MEMENTO 6/7)
Memento 27 will require players to jump down from the area above to the the pillars to the right.
Again, players may be tricked into believing that they cannot pass these pillars, however, they can walk behind them.
MEMENTO #28 – CHAPTER 15(MEMENTO 7/7)
The twenty eighth memento is a bit tricky to find as it requires players to get the furthest star piece on the right hand side of the map and take the bottom water path.
Players will be able to pass through these pillars on the bottom right to do a simple parkour jump in order to get a memento on the left.
CHILDHOOD
Childhood is an achievement that is technically handed to players as players will be able to access the new area once they collect all of the Mementos.
Players will be able to access this area by entering the last Chapter and heading to the left and falling below where Gris appears.
Down here there is an entrance that is hidden as players fall down the hole, meaning players must try to aim towards the right side, in the broken wall.
Players must sing in this area to access the final cutscene.
