When playing Genshin Impact, one of the most important aspects is to collect as many characters as you can as each character comes with it’s own elemental traits and abilities that will help provide players with.
Players are able to unlock a total of 6 free characters while playing Genshin Impact, however, will need to unlock the remained by making Wishes which require resources players can grind or can be purchased in the in-game cash shop for real money.
While there are currently a total of 30 characters, the Genshin Impact team has announced 3 new characters that will introduced into the game soon and don’t seem to show any sign of stopping anytime soon.
While the free characters players can access aren’t the best characters in the game, the free characters are good enough for players to main as they begin their journeys in the Genshin Impact world.
Players will have access to the majority of elements once these characters are unlocked, however, will still lack a few elements which they will have to purchase/wish character to obtain.
Players will, overall, not need any of these elements, especially not to begin with, but will want to ensure that they secure these elements before they reach later dungeons as having certain elements will make getting through dungeons much easier, especially if players do not have their characters levelled up enough to simply overpower.
The following are the characters players will be able to unlock for free and their special abilities.
I will not be covering everything you need to know about these characters, however, I will write an article that covers anything I missed for each of these characters within the next few weeks.
THE TRAVELER
Players will be able to choose between a male version of the Traveler and a female version of the traveler, both being depicted above.
Both Travelers attack in the same way and have the same abilities, however, depending on a player’s personal preference with gener or cosmetics, they will want to make their choices.
The Traveler has the option of being Anemo or Geo allowing players to switch between the two elements when visiting the Statue of The Seven in Liyue.
Players will only be able to change between the two elements depending on what area they are in.
Players will be given a different prompt depending on what kind of Statue of the Seven they are nearby, if it is Geo they will see the prompt Resonate with Geo and if it is Anemo they will see Resonate with Anemo.
While the Traveler is extremely useful for being able to switch between elements, the reality is that the Traveler isn’t the strongest character players can use and quite frankly players will want to remove The Traveler from their party as soon as they have better character to use.
Players will still want to try to max out their Traveler to its highest rank as it can be useful when players have lost a character and simply need a decent amount of damage output.
BASIC ATTACK
The Traveler has a few different variations to its basic attacks.
If players simply click on their auto-attack they will be able to attack up 5 times rapidly. This is called the “Normal Attack.”
If players hold down their auto-attack they will consume some Stamina and will unleash 2 rapid sword strikes at enemies. This is called the “Charged Attack.”
If players are mid-air they can use their auto-attack to strike from mid-air to the ground below, damagining all enemies in an AoE fashion.
ABILITY 1
The Traveler has the ability Palm Vortex as it’s first ability, which will deal continuous Anemo Damage to all opponents in front of them.
Upon the attack being completed it will explode dealing more Anemo Damage in an AoE fashion.
If players hold down their Palm Vortex it will deal more damage and will have a bigger AoE.
Players will be able to cause Elemental Absorption when the Vortex comes into contact with Hydro, Pyro, Cyro or Electro elements.
Elemental Absorption will add the element that Palm Vortex comes into contact with and can only be used once per use.
ABILITY 2
The Traveler has the ability Gust Surge as its second ability which when casted will cause a wind current to come forward and push objects towards it dealing Anemo Damage every 0.5 seconds up to 8 times.
If the Gust Surge comes into contact with Hydro, Pyro, Cryo or Electro it will deal 30.7% additional elemental damage of that type and can only be triggered once per use.
1ST ASCENSION PASSIVE
After the Traveler is upgraded to the 1st Ascension, players will gain their first passive which will cause the Normal Attack’s final hit to become a wind blade, dealing 60% of the attack as Anemo Damage to all enemies that are in it’s path.
4TH ASCENSION PASSIVE
After the Traveler is upgraded to the 4th Ascension, Palm Vortex will now regenerate 2% of the Traveler’s HP for 5 seconds when it kills an enemy. Players will only be able to activate this passive every 5 seconds.
AMBER
Amber is the second character that players can unlock and will be unlocked after Prologue Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind during the quest Winds of the Past.
Amber is an Archer/Bard and always wields a Bow, having the element of Pyro.
Similar to the Traveler, Amber isn’t the strongest character, but she comes in extremely useful for her long range and high damage, especially in the early days of exploration, allowing players to kite mobs and gain as much experience as they can without the risk of dying, or at least less risk.
Amber has two ways to attack and can either attack quickly by using her auto attacks or can use “R” or the console equivalent to power up her bow and target more accurately, essentially charging up her basic attack so it deals Pyro damage
Players can effectively do this in both forms of attack, however the way players damage enemies will simply be based on the player’s preference.
Unfortunately Amber is fairly weak in the long run.
The following are her abilities.
BASIC ATTACKS
As a basic attack Amber will be able to shoot 5 consecutive shots with her bow.
If players hold down Amber’s auto attack, or if they use “R” or the console equivalent, players will be able to access Amber’s Charged Attack which is a more precise Aimed Shot that increases damage and when fully charged will deal Pyro Damage.
While Amber is the area she will be able to fire arrows from the sky, dealing massive AoE Damage upon impact.
ABILITY 1
Amber’s first ability is the Explosive Puppet which allows players to summon the Baron Bunny.
Once the Baron Bunny is out it will continuously taunt the enemy, essentially taking all of the damage enemies try to deal.
Upon being destroyed the Baron Bunny will explode dealing AoE Pyro damage.
The Baron Bunny has the same Maximum Health as Amber’s Maximum Health.
When it comes to targeting the Baron Bunny, players will be able to throw it in any direction and will be able to throw it further based on how long they hold down the trigger key.
ABILITY 2
Amber’s second ability is Fiery Range. Fiery Range will allow players to damage all enemies in the range using continuous AoE Pyro Damage.
1ST ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Amber to the 1st Ascension, players will gain their first passive which increases the Critical Hit rate that is dealt by Fiery Rain by 10%.
Fiery Range will also expand its AoE by 30%.
4TH ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Amber to the 4th Ascension, players will gain their second passive which will allow Aimed Shot, their charged attack that is accessed by using R or the console equivalent, to increase in damage by 15% for 10 seconds.
UTILITY PASSIVE
As a passive, Amber is able to glide for longer by 20% due to Stamina depleting less quickly, this will extend to all members of the party as long as Amber is actively part of the group.
It should be noted that Amber’s passive will not be active if another character has the same one on the team.
KAEYA
Kaeya is the third character players can unlock for free.
Kaeya can be unlocked by completing Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind during the quest Crash Course.
Kaeya is a melee character who wields a Sword and has the element Cryo as it’s attribution.
Kaeya comes in extremely helpful in the early game, being one of the stronger characters players can obtain early on as his abilities come in extra helpful when it comes to freezing enemies in place in order to get some extra hits in without taking damage.
Kaeya is going to be one of the characters you keep on your roster until you have a better Cryo character/
Kaeya has the following abilities:
BASIC ATTACK
As a Normal Attack, Kaeya is able to attack with 5 rapid strikes.
When players hold down Kaeya’s auto attack they are able to unleash 2 rapid sword strikes, consuming stamina and causing a Charged Attack.
When Kaeya is in the air, players can attack, dealing damage to all opponents on a path, essentially dealing AoE damage upon impact.
ABILITY 1
Kaeya’s first ability is Frostgnaw which unleashes a frigid blast that deals Cryo damage to all enemies in front of him.
If a mob is in water, this will also freeze them.
ABILITY 2
Kaeya’s second ability is Glacial Waltz and will bring all the ice that is in the area and summon 3 icicles that revolve around him 4 times for 8 seconds.
Icicles will follow Kaeya and deal Cryo damage to all enemies in his path for as long as they are up.
1ST ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Kaeya to his 1st Ascension, players will be able to regenerate 15% of his attack as HP whenever using Frostgnaw.
4TH ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Kaeya to his 4th Ascension , players will drop additional Elemental Particles everytime they freeze an enemy with Frostgnaw.
Frostgnaw will be able to provide a maximum of 2 additional Elemental Particles per use.
UTILITY PASSIVE
As a passive, Kaeya will provide him and his party with 20% less Stamina consumption when running.
It should be noted that players will not be able to stack this with another passive talent with the same passive.
LISA
Lisa is the fourth character players can receive for free after completing Act I: The Outlander Who Caught the Wind during the quest Sparks Amongst the Pages.
Lisa is a caster who wields a Catalyst and has Electro as her element.
Lisa isn’t the most powerful character, though she does come with some perks that are specific to Electro damage as well as AoE damage, though I will say that she is a bit hard to manage in the early game for players as she deals significantly little damage unless played properly.
Lisa will simply need to be replaced in the future.
The following are Lisa’s Abilities:
BASIC ATTACK
Lisa’s basic attacks allow her to deal 4 Electro attacks that inflict Electro damage.
When players hold down her Basic Attack they can summon a Charged Attack that consumes some Stamina, and will deal Electro damage upon being released.
When Lisa is in the air she can plunge downward, dealing AoE Electro damage to enemies in range..
ABILITY 1
Lisa’s first ability Violet Arc has two forms.
Firstly, Lisa can simply press her ability to release a homing lightning orb that deals Electro damage and applies a single stack of Conductive Status, which can stack three times to cause an AoE attack to 3 nearby enemies.
Players will be able to affect a single enemy per stack.
If players charge Violet Arc by holding down the ability, they will witness an AoE circle that calls down lightning dealing massive Electro Damage to all nearby enemies.
Players will be able to amplify the damage by damaging enemies that already have Conductive stacks applied to them.
ABILITY 2
Lisa’s second ability is Lightning Rose.
Lightning Rose allows Lisa to summon a Lightning Rose that unleashes lightning bolts to enemies surrounding it, dealing Electro damage.
The Lightning Rose continuously deals damage and knocks back enemies for as long as it is active.
1ST ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Lisa to her first ascension, Lisa will be able to apply the Conductive status from Violet Arc’s whenever using a Charged Attack.
4TH ASCENSION PASSIVE
Upon upgrading Lisa to her fourth ascension, players will be able to decrease the defences of an enemy hit by Lightning Rose by 15% for 10 seconds.
UTILITY PASSIVE
Lisa’s passive is that she will have a 20% chance to refund a single item out of all potions that she crafts.

Barbara is another castor who wields a Catalyst and has the element Hydro.

Barbara is very powerful and is definitely a very important character to have on your roster.

Players can hold down Barbara’s basic attack in order to deal AoE Hydro damage after releasing.
When Barbara is mid-air, players have the opportunity to plunge down in order to damage all enemies in her path with AoE Hydro damage.
ABILITY 1
Barbara’s first ability is Let The Show Begin ♪ which allows her to summon water droplets that look like musical notes and form a Melody Loops that deals Hydro damage to surrounding mobs and afflicting them with the Wet status.
Melody Loop causes Barbara’s basic attacks to heal all characters in the party and the nearby player’s party and scales with Barbara’s Max Health.
Barbara will gain 4 times the amount of healing from her Charged Attack.
Melody Loop will also regenerate some Health every so often to the active character.
ABILITY 2
