Trying to get your character to look perfect can be quite a hard task to achieve in any game you play. I know when I first started playing FFXIV I ended up experiencing decision paralysis and rushed my character creation, though at the time I didn’t think I would play the game for long since I had no idea what to expect.
Though I’m solidly happy with the creation of my character, albeit there are a few things I would change that requires a Fantasia, the decision to finally change my hair after 6 years finally happened when I started streaming the game. I’m not typically someone who changes my appearance too often in FFXIV, relying on staple glams and not typically the itch many around me seem to have.
It’s funny because I see players in my community change their hairstyle, glams and other traits every week and here I am essentially not making changes for half a decade.
Now, luckily for the folks who want to change their hairstyle or hair colour more regularly, you’re going to be happy to know that you’re not going to have to spend any real-world currency to do so. Although, understandably, Square Enix has paywalled a few of the customization options in the game such as name changes and race changes, players will be able to freely change anything to do with hair for the cost of some Gil.
So, today I’m going to cover all you need to know when it comes to hair and hopefully help you figure out how to get that new snazzy hairdo you got from side content.
Note: If you have any questions about FFXIV that you want me to cover feel free to leave them in a comment below, you can also ask me while I am streaming on Twitch, YouTube or in our community discord.
HOW TO GET DIFFERENT HAIRSTYLES IN FFXIV
Before I begin I just want to briefly touch on a topic that may interest you. While players have a decent number of options for hairstyles when they first create their character in FFXIV, the reality is that most are going to need to be obtained by playing the game.
Many of these hairstyles are found in side content such as PVP, Duties or instanced zones like Eureka and Bozja. Though many Hairstyles from side content can be bought and sold on the Market Board, some are bound to the player as they are untradable, requiring the player to farm for them on their own.
Every so often one of these untradable hairstyles will be made more accessible to players in events such as the Moogle Tomestone Event meaning that players may not have to participate in content they are not interested in completing. That being said, event rewards are never limited to only untradable items meaning that if there is a hairstyle you want that is currently available in an event and are unable to participate in, you can choose to wait until the end of the event as chances are very high that players will stockpile on them and the price will tank.
In the most recent Moogle Tomestone Event items that were worth 1 million Gil are now only worth 300,000 maximum and it has been months since that event ended.
Of course, I cannot guarantee this for you, but given the history of events like this, it tends to be pretty typical.
HOW TO CHANGE YOUR HAIRSTYLE AND/OR HAIR COLOUR IN FFXIV
I genuinely don’t know if you’re going to be surprised when I tell you that there are a few steps you’re going to have to complete to unlock the ability to change your Hairstyle or Hair Colour in FFXIV. The more I write FFXIV guides the more I realize just how confusing getting access to certain tasks can be.
Since I’m someone who accepts and completes every single quest I see this was never an issue for me as chances were I unlocked whatever I wanted to do long before I even planned on doing it. Now, my downfall is that I never read any of the dialogue NPCs are saying so I don’t even know what is at my fingertips *cough* I am fixing that though by going through the story again.
Luckily for players, once this feature is unlocked it’s relatively easy to keep changing your hairstyle, though you will need to be in cities with an Inn or have personal or FC housing.
Inn locations include New Gridania, Limsa Lominsa, Ul’dah, Ishgard, Kugane, The Crystarium and Old Sharlyan.
To start, players will need to complete their MSQ until level 15. The quest players need to complete is called “Call of the Sea” and you can check your Journal using J to see if you have already done this.
Once this is completed, players must head to Limsa Lominsa Upper Decks where they will find a quest called “Beauty is Only Scalp-Deep” provided by S’dhodjbi at X:11, Y:11.
Players will not be able to see this quest if they have not completed the aforementioned MSQ though.
Don’t worry, these quests don’t take an eternity and chances are if you’ve already gotten bored of your hair, you’ve already made it past level 15… *cough* though I could be wrong.
Nonetheless, Beauty is only Scalp-Deep unlocks a new feature called the Aesthetician, whose name is Jandelaine and from on you may summon him at the Inn or by placing an Aethetician’s Bell in your personal housing.
Using the Aestheticians Bell will cost players 2,000 Gil per visit, though players will receive 1 complimentary visit and can get an additional Jandelaine’s Token from completing the level 50 quest “Of Siblings and Side-whiskers” which is provided by the Deputy Postmoogle in Limsa Lominsa Lower Decks at X:10.4, Y:11.3.
I really wouldn’t cost the sweat of the visit since 2,000 Gil is excruciatingly easy to get, though if you’re struggling with your financials I would strongly recommend my guide on the best ways to farm Gil.
CAN I TEST THINGS OUT WITH THE AESTHETICIAN WITHOUT PAYING?
Absolutely! Similar to a Fantasia, players will only be charged Gil or have their token consumed if they confirm the changes they made to their appearance.
I strongly recommend using this to your advantage when you unlock a new hairstyle since there’s no other way to preview hairstyles outside of a visit to our new friend.
It should be noted that while players can unlock all the different hairstyles in the game, there are some that different races cannot use, so these will not appear on your list if you have them unlocked.
It can still be a good idea to unlock all of the hairstyles in advance since you never know when you’ll next come across it and there’s always a chance you may want to change your race in the future.
Hairstyles may also appear differently based on your race or gender, so it’s not always useful to look up images of hairstyles since there isn’t a fully documented catalogue at the moment. This is heavy because images would need to be user-submitted as hairstyles are bound to your character and do not carry over to Alts, with some exceptions to those purchased on Mogstation or Contest Rewards.
WHAT CAN I CHANGE AT THE AESTHETICIAN?
While players will not be able to change the base features of their character model, players will be able to change more than you would imagine for 2,000 Gil.
Changeable features at the Aesthetician include Hairstyle, Hair Colour, Eyebrow Shape, Lip Colours, Scars, Facepaint and Tattoos.
Essentially anything cosmetic can be altered here as long as it doesn’t have to do with the structure of your body.
