When I first started playing Whiteout Survival, I felt like Squads were unnecessary, since I didn’t mind changing the composition of my Troops and Heroes every time I sent them out. Looking back now, I see how silly that thought was because I rely on them so heavily.
Though I already have 5 of my Squads currently unlocked, I am still patiently waiting for the 6th Squad as I already have plans on how to utilize it.
While I do believe that players can get by without setting their Squads up in Whiteout Survival, I do believe it’s a massive handicap. Players can get away with manually composing their rallies with daily content, but when push comes to shove and players are in the heat of PVP, Squads can be the factor that either guarantees success or ends in failure.
The first time I used Squads was during the Bear Hunt/Hunting Trap. Though this is PVE content, rallies get filled quickly and if you want to maximize your damage you will want to ensure you only use the correct Heroes. I’ll cover more on this shortly.
Squads also became tremendously useful when my alliance began fighting for Strongholds, Fortresses, and Sunfire Castle. Though my Squad formation changes throughout these battles, utilizing Squads gives me more time to focus on batch healing while my troops make their way to the rally.
This guide will take you through everything you need to know about Squads, including some pre-planned compositions you may want to use. I will also break down how I utilize my Squad slots so you can have a better idea on how to optimize them.
HOW TO UNLOCK SQUADS
There are two ways to unlock Troop Formations or Squads in Whiteout Survival. They are correlated with your VIP level and your Furnace level.
It should be noted, the two Squad slots that you get from VIP are only useable if you have VIP active. Though I will probably delve into the benefits of always having an active VIP, if your VIP expires you will not be able to use these two slots.
Players can unlock a maximum of 6 Squads, and they are unlocked as follows:
Reach Furnace 10
Reach Furnace 15
Reach Furnace 20
Reach Furnace 23
Activate VIP 5
Activate VIP 8
HOW TO SET UP SQUADS
I have to admit, I’m not a huge fan of the UI for setting up Squads because it’s a bit confusing. So, get ready for an over explanation!
- Click on your Profile Picture
- Select Troops (the second icon at the bottom with the picture of a list)
- Select Squads
- Select the Heroes you would like to use
- Manually Select, Equalize or Balance troops based on your needs
- Select Save and choose the slot you would like to use
From now on, your Squads will be bound to your Character and can be utilized on any device. This means that players who are playing on their mobile device and Bluestacks will not need to redo their Squads and will be able to freely use them on either.
A couple of things to note:
- When you train new troops or promote troops, they will be removed from your Squads
- If you choose to Balance or Equalize troops if your Rally size changes, or you get more March Queues/Troops you will need to redo these
I personally update my Squads every day or every other day, depending on the content my Alliance is doing. If content is low pressure or slower, I manually send out my March Queues, but if the content is expected to be high pressure, I will update my Squads the day before or the day of.
WHAT IS EQUALIZING?
Equalizing will split your Troops down evenly in the center based on how many March Queues you have.
Say you have 4 March Queues and 40 Troops, this means when you press Equalize you will have 10 Troops in your formation.
If you have 5 March Queues and 40 Troops, you will have 8 Troops in your formation.
WHAT IS BALANCE?
Balance is an extremely helpful tool in PVP when you need to change your formation based on another Alliance’s Troops. Essentially, this will fill your Formation with the % of the type of Troops you select, starting from your most powerful.
If your highest level Troops are out, it will begin filling this % with lower level Troops.
MY ADVICE FOR SQUADS TO SET UP
The way you set up your Squads will be completely up to you, but this is the setup I personally use:
SQUADS 1-3 (HUNTING TRAP/BEAR HUNT)
I use my first 3 Squad slots specifically for the Hunting Trap. This makes it extremely easy to both preset your Heroes, but also makes it very quick to navigate between which to dispatch.
All 3 Squads should be “Equalized” to help ensure that your Troops can sneak in with the other player’s rallies. You may be thinking to yourself… but I have 4-5 March Queues…
Well, that’s the great thing about Squads. When your Heroes are out, you can still send out that Squad with the same number of Troops. So, when all 3 Squads don’t have Heroes, simply send out your Troops to get your damage in!
SQUAD 4 (UTILITY)
Typically, I use the fourth slot for Rallies I manually sign up for. So for me, it’s Jessie with my troops balanced to 17/17/17. My troops are balanced as such because it helps make sure that other allies can join in the Rallies so we all get the rewards for the day.
The balancing will depend on the average of your allies’ rally size and what level Polar Terror they are regularly farming.
This is also the Squad I change whenever I need an extra formation for content I am doing. For example, if we are battling a Facility and I require 2 attack Squads and 1 Defense Squad, I will utilize this to preset my Heroes. The need for the third Squad isn’t typically necessary, but it comes in very handy when there’s a back and forth with the Alliance you are fighting.
SQUAD 5-6 (FACILITIES, FORTRESSES, STRONGHOLDS, SUNFIRE CASTLE)
I would strongly recommend that players set up 2 Squads specifically for PVP Content.
One will be your Defensive line-up and the other will be your Offensive Lineup.
Examples would be as follows:
OFFENSIVE
This is what I use when I’m attacking a building that is garrisoned.
Jessie in first slot with 2 of the strongest Heroes after
Balanced troops: This typically depends on what the other team who’s garrisoning has.
DEFENSIVE
This is what I use to garrison a building.
Sergey in first slot with 2 of the strongest Heroes after
Balanced troops: 50/17/33
CONCLUSION
I don’t know how to end this other than… Use your Squads! You’re going to save a lot of mental drain and stress! While yes, you can manually select formations on the fly, it’s always a good idea to have presets in case there is no one else logged into the game for you to get a reminder.
I find this especially for Formations that require the balancing tool, since I have such a terrible memory.
I will hammer down how useful Squads are for the Hunting Trap and if you haven’t brushed yourself up on the most powerful strategy for the Bear Hunt, I strongly urge you to do so.
But I’m curious, do you use your Squads? If yes, what do you use them for and what kind of Formations do you use? Let me know in the comments below!
