I can’t tell you how funny it is to me that I’m writing a guide about PVP in a game like FFXIV since I pretended that PVP didn’t exist in the game for years.
A big portion of my ignoring PVP was because the older versions of it weren’t very smooth and often felt like a chore instead of entertainment.
Admittedly my second wind for PVP came from spamming different PVP game modes during a recent Moogle Tomestone Event and learning which game mode I preferred the feel of. Though PVP is still quite clunky at points, it’s undeniable that the changes have made PVP much more enjoyable and accessible to newer players, causing it to become a daily task I take part in.
Although players can queue for any type of PVP from all across Eorzea, as long as they are not in an instanced area such as the Battle Hall or something like Eureka or Bozja, players will still need to make their way to the Wolves’ Den. You see, the Wolves’ Den is the only place a player can change their PVP HUD without the risk of getting into combat and has a series of Striking Dummies for players to practice PVP rotations on. Not only that, but the Wolves’ Den has a series of NPCs that are only available here and are the only way of spending PVP exclusive currencies like Wolf Marks and Trophy Crystals.
Now, much like The Gold Saucer, the Wolves’ Den is an offshoot area that tends to be difficult to locate after you enter it the first time. This is simply because the quest associated with it will provide a flag directly outside of the area for you to locate it and it’s realistically in a pretty forgettable place.
Luckily for players, you only need to head to the physical entrance of the Wolves’ Den a single time before it becomes part of your quick Teleport tab, though I was shocked to hear that not all players use this or even know it exists.
About a month ago a member of my community asked how to get to a specific area and when I explained it was under the X tab, they responded tremendously confused. You see, I had no idea that there were players who navigated the world simply by using their map, using dropdown menus to select the area in which they were headed and when I realized that it suddenly made a lot more sense why players were getting confused about how to get to the Wolves’ Den. Don’t worry, today I’m going to take you through the many ways you can get to the Wolves’ Den as well as the way that you initially unlock this zone.
Note: If you have any questions about FFXIV that you want me to cover feel free to leave them in a comment below, you can also ask me while I am streaming on Twitch, YouTube or in our community discord.
HOW TO UNLOCK THE WOLVES’ DEN (PVP) IN FFXIV
To begin, players will need to be affiliated with a Grand Company before they can begin taking part in PVP matches. It’s odd, but there are several tasks a player must complete with a Grand Company before side content unlocks such as housing or even certain Dungeons.
Luckily for players, being part of a Grand Company is effortlessly rewarding and a player will never be bound to a single Grand Company making your initial decision not worth thinking about. Many players will level up all three Grand Companies over their time playing FFXIV so they can unlock all the unique achievements or obtain the various Gear that is provided by each of the three.
The ability to align yourself with a Grand Company unlocks after players complete the Main Story Quest “A Hero in the Making.” This quest happens at level 20 and will unlock the ability to choose which Grand Company you want to join by accepting the Quest “The Company You Keep” with the name of the Grand Company you want after it.
From then on, players will begin receiving quests from an Officer in their Grand Company, though the quest you are looking for in regards to the Wolves Den and PVP is called “A Pup No Longer” again with the name of your Grand Company directly after. This quest unlocks at level 30 and is a simple “head to the area” kind of quest. Players will never need to participate in PVP if they do not want to.
To access the Wolves Den, players must make their way to Moraby Drydocks which is in Lower La Noscea. From here players must head to the Pier and must take a Boat to the Wolves’ Den this can be done at the Ferry Skipper at X:26.8, Y:35.8.
It should be noted that there are several quests in the Overworld which will unlock the various forms of PVP. These will be quite obvious as they are identified with a Blue Quest Marker and a + and typically a player will never want to avoid these as they generally provide content that is equally as important as the MSQ.
A few of these quests are located in the Wolves’ Den, though a player will not need to return here unless they are hoping to spend their PVP currency.
Unlike the Battle Hall there is no way to get to the Wolves’ Den using the Duty Finder, though this isn’t much of a problem as the Aetheryte for the Wolves’ Den is directly where you want it versus the Battle Hall which would require several steps to get to.
HOW TO GET TO THE WOLVES’ DEN USING THE TELEPORT ACTION IN FFXIV
I exclusively use the Teleport Action to get around the world, unless I am using a flag that another player has pinned to get somewhere. I personally find this to be the easiest and most effective way of travelling, especially because I pin my favourite locations so I can move quickly between them.
By default all players should have the Teleport Action on their Hotbar, however, if a player wants to make space for another action they can reclaim this action from the Actions & Traits menu, which is opened by pressing “P” and heading to the General Tab.
While at first I simply had the Teleport Action on every Job’s Hotbar, I redid my HUD Layout and hot bars and now have a Shared Hotbar which has important Macros for quickly switching Jobs and teleport functionality so I don’t have to worry about wasted Hotbar space.
If you are using the Teleport Action you will have to navigate to the second Tab “La Noscea” and press “Wolves’ Den Pier” which is the bottom of the list.
HOW TO GET TO THE WOLVES’ DEN USING THE MAP IN FFXIV
Getting to the Wolves Den using the Map is a bit more complicated than simply using the Teleport Action. If players are instant about only using their map to get around you must follow these steps:
- Select your map
- Select La Noscea
- Select Wolves’ Den Pier
- Click on the Aetheryte
Alright, alright, it wasn’t that complicated. I’m just lazy AF and I would refuse to do this.
